Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone has secured a fresh start in France, moving to Rennes on a season-long loan from Marseille. The 22-year-old, originally from Montreal, is looking to prove himself in Ligue 1 after struggling to make an impact at Marseille.

Kone's time at Marseille was marked by limited opportunities, with injuries affecting his performance. Since joining the club in June from English side Watford, he managed only nine appearances. His move to Rennes provides a new chance to showcase his skills and gain more playing time in one of Europe’s top leagues.

This transfer makes Kone the first Canadian player to represent Rennes, a club currently struggling in France’s top division. Rennes sits 15th in Ligue 1 with a record of 6 wins, 12 losses, and 2 draws—far behind Marseille, which holds a significantly higher position in the league table.

A Journey from Canada to Europe

Kone’s journey to European football began in December 2022 when he left CF Montreal to join Watford. Over his time in England, he made 63 appearances across all competitions before moving to Marseille.

Born in the Ivory Coast, Kone immigrated to Canada at the age of seven. He signed his first professional contract with CF Montreal in August 2021 and made his Major League Soccer debut in February 2022. That season, he played 25 matches, gaining attention for his talent and potential.

A Rising Star in Canadian Football

On the international stage, Kone has been a key player for Canada. He featured in all three of Canada’s group-stage matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, making history as the youngest member of the squad at just 20 years old.

So far, he has earned 26 caps for Canada, including 17 starts, and has scored three goals. His performances continue to highlight him as a promising talent for the national team.

As Kone embarks on this new chapter with Rennes, fans will be eager to see if he can make a strong impact and solidify his place in European football.
