In a rare breakthrough, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. One mother, Einav Zangauker, whose son remains captive, said, “If I have one dream, it is seeing Matan sleep in his own bed.”
In Gaza, displaced residents like Ahmed Sheheiber expressed hope to finally return home after months in shelters. “It’s a huge day, huge joy,” he said through tears.
Signs of Progress and Future Challenges
Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, joined peace talks in Egypt alongside diplomats from Qatar and Israel. Their presence signaled the seriousness of the negotiations. Trump even hinted at visiting the Middle East soon to oversee the next steps.
This marks the third ceasefire attempt since 2023. Previous truces—one in November 2023 and another early this year—collapsed after short-lived exchanges of hostages and prisoners.
