Jacques Salvail, a popular singer, actor, and host from the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 79. He died peacefully on Sunday after battling complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He spent his final days in palliative care, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
A Loving Goodbye
His son, Carl Salvail, shared that the family had four full days together to say goodbye. “We had four days together, with the whole family, to say goodbye,” he said. Jacques, even in his last moments, kept his sense of humor alive. Carl added, “He was ready. He said, ‘I’m going to join my friends.’”
Despite his health struggles, Jacques smiled through the pain and stayed strong for his family, just like he had always done throughout his life.
Early Career: Radio to Singing
Jacques began his career in the late 1960s as a radio host, working at Montreal stations CJMS and CKLM. His voice and charm soon led him to a career in music. In the early 1970s, he found success with songs like Le bonheur c’est toi, Mary, and Une belle histoire, which became fan favorites.
A TV Star in the Spotlight
In 1971, Jacques replaced Pierre Lalonde as the host of the television show Jeunesse d’aujourd’hui. The show was renamed Jeunesse, and Jacques remained its host until 1974. He brought warmth, joy, and energy to the screen, quickly becoming a familiar face in Canadian homes.
By the late 1970s, Jacques shifted toward disco, releasing upbeat tracks like Never Alone Again and Nothing Can Stop Us. His music followed the mood of the times and brought smiles to many.
Theatre and Later Years
During the 1980s, Jacques added acting to his list of talents. He performed on stage alongside comedian Gilles Latulippe. Their chemistry on stage made them an iconic duo, and they performed together regularly.
A stroke in the 2000s forced Jacques to step away from performing. But his love for entertaining never faded. A few years ago, he dressed up as Santa Claus for a photo shoot arranged by his son Carl, a photographer. Jacques brought joy to children once again and said, “The look on children’s faces when they see me as Santa Claus is the same wonder as when I was doing Jeunesse.”
Jacques Salvail touched the hearts of many across generations with his music, shows, and warm personality. His charm, voice, and legacy will live on in the memories of fans and loved ones.
