James Gunn announces the start of filming for the re-titled "SUPERMAN" film, offering a glimpse of Superman's suit and Rachel Brosnahan's portrayal of Lois Lane. (DC Comics)

March 01, 2024

James Gunn, the renowned director, took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the commencement of principal photography for the film formerly known as "Superman: Legacy," now officially titled "SUPERMAN." Coincidentally, the start date, February 29, also marks Superman's birthday, adding a touch of serendipity to the announcement. Gunn shared his journey from the initial script draft, where the film was named "Superman: Legacy," to the final draft, which solidified the title as "SUPERMAN." He expressed his excitement about bringing the film to audiences in July 2025.

In addition to the title change, Gunn offered fans a sneak peek at Superman's suit, featuring a leathery "S" symbol. This update comes after Nathan Fillion, who is set to portray Guy Gardner in the movie, mentioned during the Television Critics Association event earlier this month that the team was gearing up for their first table read, indicating progress in the production.

Rachel Brosnahan, who will play Lois Lane, Clark Kent's love interest and a journalist at the Daily Planet, recently shared her excitement about her role. She described Lois as "feisty, marvelous, and fiercely intelligent," hinting at the character's dynamic portrayal in the film. Brosnahan and Fillion have both been careful not to reveal too much about the project, emphasizing their commitment to honoring the beloved source material while also bringing their unique interpretations to the characters.

Written and directed by Gunn, the film draws inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic run by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. It will focus on Clark Kent's early days as a reporter at the Daily Planet and his journey to becoming the iconic superhero in Metropolis. Fans can look forward to seeing Superman soar onto the big screen in July 2025.
