James Ransone, the American actor widely known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire, has died in Los Angeles. He was 46.
According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner, Ransone died on Friday. The cause of death was listed as suicide.
A Career Defined by Complex Characters
Ransone gained critical recognition for portraying Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka in the second season of The Wire. His performance as the troubled dock worker turned petty criminal left a lasting impression on viewers of the acclaimed Baltimore-set drama.
Created by David Simon, The Wire remains one of television’s most influential series. Ransone’s Ziggy was among its most tragic figures, balancing recklessness with vulnerability.
Continued work with David Simon
Ransone later reunited with Simon on HBO’s war miniseries Generation Kill. He appeared in all seven episodes as Corporal Josh Ray Person, a real-life U.S. Marine.
The role further cemented his reputation for portraying emotionally raw, deeply human characters.
From Cult Dramas To Major Films
Beyond television, Ransone built a varied film career. He appeared in It Chapter Two, playing Eddie Kaspbrak, alongside a high-profile cast that included Bill Hader, Jessica Chastain, and James McAvoy.
Fans and critics alike noted how Ransone’s performance stood out, even within an ensemble filled with established stars.

Tributes Pour In
News of Ransone’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes across social media. Fellow actor François Arnaud described him as a “unique actor” who continually inspired those around him.

Early Life And Breakthrough
Born in Baltimore in 1979, Ransone studied at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland. He broke into acting with the controversial 2002 teen drama Ken Park.
A year later, he landed his defining role on The Wire, a part that would shape his career.
Speaking Openly About Trauma
In 2021, Ransone publicly shared that he had been sexually abused by a former tutor during his youth. He said the trauma contributed to later struggles with alcohol and heroin addiction.
He reported the abuse in 2020, though authorities declined to pursue charges, according to Page Six.
The Emotional Toll Of Acting
Ransone often spoke candidly about the psychological weight of his work. In a 2016 interview, he said acting sometimes required him to inhabit “unlikable skin,” which could leave him emotionally drained.
“As a result of that, I don’t always feel good,” he said.
A Legacy Remembered
James Ransone leaves behind a body of work marked by honesty, intensity, and emotional risk. His performances continue to resonate with audiences who saw their own fragility reflected in his characters.
