Jane Birkin held the first-ever Birkin bag named after her. That same handbag, seen as a fashion treasure, was sold at auction on Thursday by Sotheby’s. CNN
A black leather Birkin bag once owned by Jane Birkin has just made history. It sold for a record €8.6 million (about $10 million), including fees. The auction ended with a final bid of €7 million ($8.2 million), making it the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.
A Handbag with a Rich History
This Birkin was the first one ever made by Hermès. The company created it especially for Jane Birkin in 1984. She used the bag almost daily from 1985 to 1994. It became a fashion icon not just because of its brand, but because of Birkin’s fame and everyday use.
The bag, though scratched and worn, was the star of an online luxury fashion auction. The auction featured other top designer items too. A buyer from Japan won the bag after a 10-minute bidding war with eight other collectors.
Why the Bag is So Special
The Birkin bag wasn’t made just to look good. Birkin wanted a roomy and practical bag. She once told Hermès she needed a bag that was “half the size of a suitcase.” She even drew the design on an airplane sick bag during a flight. Hermès made it for her in 1985, and the rest is history.
Over time, the bag changed owners, but it always stayed famous. It has even been displayed in top museums in New York and London. The seller in this auction, known only as Catherine B., last bought it 25 years ago.
Simple, Worn – and Priceless
Unlike the shiny, untouched bags that collectors love today, this one is very different. Birkin used it every day. It has her initials “J.B.” on the front, and the strap still holds a silver nail clipper. She liked to keep her nails tidy at all times. Stickers from charity groups like UNICEF also left marks on the bag.
Still, this “used” bag outperformed even the most lavish Birkins sold before. In 2022, a white diamond-covered Birkin sold for over $450,000. Another made from crocodile skin went for nearly $390,000 in 2021. But none of them came close to this bag’s price.
A Lasting Legacy
Jane Birkin passed away in 2023 at age 76. She once joked that people would remember her for the bag more than for her career. Her prediction might be true.
The auction house said the sale shows how powerful and emotional fashion can be. Jane Birkin’s practical, handwritten idea turned into the most desirable bag in the world.
Her bag broke records not just because of its design, but because of its story — a reminder that true value often lies in history and personal meaning.
