Canada's men’s rugby team faced a tough start in their Pacific Nations Cup opener on Sunday. They were up against Japan, who dominated the first half with a staggering 31-0 lead.
The game began with Japan's early advantage as Malo Tuitama broke through Canada’s defence just four minutes into the match, scoring the first try. Canada struggled to find their rhythm, and Japan continued to exploit gaps in their defence. By the 31st minute, Japan’s Nicholas McCurran made a break, passing to Dylan Riley for another try, pushing Japan’s lead to 38-0.
Canada’s head coach, Kingsley Jones, acknowledged the team’s sluggish start, comparing Japan’s speed and efficiency to a “whirlwind.” At halftime, Jones challenged his players to improve and fight back. His words seemed to inspire a better performance in the second half.
Despite Japan’s continued dominance, including a try from Warner Dearns early in the second half, Canada began to respond. Andrew Coe, Lucas Rumball, and the McMullin twins, Talon and Takoda, each scored tries for Canada. Andrew Coe touched down after chasing a loose ball, while Lucas Rumball scored after a series of rucks. The McMullin twins, who had significant support from friends and family, both contributed tries, showcasing their strong partnership.
The Canadians managed to close the gap with a more determined effort in the latter part of the game. However, the damage from the first half proved too great, and they ended up losing 55-28.
Captain Lucas Rumball expressed disappointment with the initial performance but remained hopeful about future games. He noted the mix of experienced and rookie players in the squad, recognizing that it might take time for the team to gel fully.
Japan’s victory was highlighted by their disciplined and well-executed game plan. Despite Canada’s improved performance in the second half, Japan’s early dominance ensured their win.
Looking ahead, Canada will next face the United States on August 31 in Carson, California. Both teams will then travel to Japan for the semifinals and other concluding matches in September.
