Jim Lovell, the astronaut who led the dramatic Apollo 13 mission in 1970, died on August 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the age of 97. The cause of death was not shared. His family remembered him as a Navy pilot, space explorer, and, above all, a loving father and grandfather.
Apollo 13: A “Successful Failure”
Before Apollo 13, Lovell had already made history on Gemini 7, Gemini 12, and Apollo 8. Apollo 13 was set to be NASA’s third moon landing, with astronauts John Swigert Jr. and Fred Haise Jr. joining him. But two days into the mission, an oxygen tank exploded 200,000 miles from Earth. Lovell calmly told mission control, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.”
The crew’s moon landing was canceled. They used the spacecraft’s engines to loop around the moon and head back to Earth. After a tense three-day journey, the astronauts splashed down safely in the South Pacific. The mission became known as a “successful failure” because the crew survived against the odds.
An Icon in Space History
Lovell was the first astronaut to fly to the moon twice without landing on it. Apollo 8, his first lunar mission, gave him a unique view of the Earth as a small, fragile planet. He often spoke about how that perspective changed his outlook on life. The mission also produced the famous “Earthrise” photograph, taken by crewmate William Anders.
Apollo 8’s Christmas Eve broadcast in 1968 reached about one billion people, reading from the Book of Genesis and offering a message of unity during a turbulent year in the United States.
Tributes from Fellow Astronauts
Tom Hanks, who portrayed Lovell in the film “Apollo 13,” called him a man who dared, dreamed, and inspired others to go beyond their limits. Buzz Aldrin, Lovell’s Gemini 12 crewmate and the second man on the moon, called him one of his best friends and praised his achievements across four major space missions.
Awards and Later Life
Lovell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970. He served as deputy director of the Johnson Space Center before retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1973. His honors include the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and induction into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
In his later years, Lovell spoke openly about space exploration and the lessons of Apollo 13. He believed that survival often depends on teamwork, quick thinking, and taking action rather than hoping for miracles.
