Former U.S. president Joe Biden recently had surgery to remove skin cancer from his forehead. His spokesperson, Kelly Scully, confirmed the procedure on Thursday. The statement followed video footage that showed Biden leaving a Delaware church with a visible scar.
Type of Procedure
Scully said doctors used Mohs surgery, a specialized procedure where thin layers of skin are removed and examined until no cancer cells remain. This method is common for treating certain skin cancers and helps reduce the risk of recurrence while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Past Health Concerns
This is not the first time Biden has faced a skin cancer diagnosis. Two years ago, while still in office, he had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his chest. Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common and treatable forms of skin cancer, often linked to long-term sun exposure.
Other Cancer Battles
Biden has dealt with more serious health news this year. In May, his office revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Doctors confirmed it was an aggressive form that had already spread to his bones. The announcement drew concern, but Biden publicly expressed determination to keep fighting.
“Cancer touches us all,” Biden wrote on social media at the time. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
Family Struggles with Cancer
The Biden family has faced multiple battles with the disease. His son Beau died in 2015 from a brain tumour at just 46 years old, a tragedy that deeply shaped Biden’s life and political career. His wife, Jill, has also faced cancer. She had two lesions removed in 2023, both of which tested cancerous.
Ongoing Health Challenges
At 82 years old, Biden continues to deal with multiple health concerns while remaining active in public life. Despite his medical challenges, he has stayed visible, attending church, meeting supporters, and speaking at events. His health updates are closely watched, as many consider his resilience a reflection of his long public career.
