A specially minted British coin to mark the year the Beatles legend and peace advocate John Lennon is displayed in the Strawberry Fields section of Central Park, dedicated to the former Beatle, March 5, 2025, in New York. Image via AP

The Royal Mint is set to release a special coin collection in honor of John Lennon, commemorating the year he would have turned 85. The collection pays tribute to the legendary Beatles musician and peace advocate, ensuring his legacy continues to shine.

A Tribute in Precious Metal

The new coin, available from Monday, features a striking portrait of Lennon. The design is inspired by a famous 1974 photograph taken by music industry photographer Bob Gruen. The image captures Lennon in a side profile, standing on the rooftop of his New York penthouse.

To the left of the portrait, his name is inscribed, while the right side bears the word “Imagine.” This reference to his iconic 1971 song and album serves as a reminder of the powerful messages of hope and peace he championed. The tribute comes more than four decades after Lennon was tragically shot and killed in New York on December 8, 1980, at the age of 40.

Part of the "Music Legends" Series

The Royal Mint has a long tradition of honoring historical figures, from King Alfred the Great to King Charles III. Lennon is the latest addition to its “Music Legends” series, which celebrates influential musicians. He now joins the ranks of Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Queen, the Rolling Stones, and Shirley Bassey, who have all been commemorated with their own coins.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, emphasized Lennon’s lasting impact. “Arguably one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time, Lennon’s achievements as an artist, activist, and advocate for peace continue to live on and will now be forever remembered on a coin,” she said.

Collectible Coins in Various Designs

Fans of Lennon and collectors alike will be able to purchase these coins in a range of materials, including gold and colored designs. Prices will start at £18.50 ($24) for a five-pound coin, with the most premium version— a 200-pound gold coin— priced at £6,420 ($8,330).

While these coins are technically legal tender, their high value makes it unlikely that anyone will use them for everyday purchases—certainly not to buy a copy of The White Album!

This limited-edition release ensures that Lennon’s influence, both in music and as a symbol of peace, remains alive for generations to come.
