Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson is stepping back from work after suffering a serious health setback. His daughter, Mikhaila Peterson, announced that her father will take a break from “everything” following exposure to heavy mold while cleaning out his late father’s home.

The 63-year-old professor and author has postponed his podcast episodes and moved his European tour dates.

Struggle with chronic illness

Mikhaila explained that her father’s symptoms worsened due to chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). She said he first showed signs in 2017 and later received a diagnosis in 2018. Peterson himself has spoken openly about living with the condition.

CIRS is not an officially recognized disease by major health agencies. Some doctors remain skeptical due to limited scientific evidence.

What is CIRS?

The illness is believed to occur when the immune system reacts abnormally to toxins, such as mold in damp buildings. Symptoms often include fatigue, pain, headaches, memory issues, and sensitivity to light.

Specialist Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, who coined the term in the 1990s, says treatment requires avoiding toxic exposure and helping the body recover.

Mikhaila’s statement

On X, Mikhaila wrote:
“Over the last year or so, he’s been feeling the impact of CIRS more and more. Recently, he was exposed to a particularly moldy environment while helping clean out my grandfather’s house after he passed away, which severely flared symptoms.”

She added that Peterson has been “suffering badly” for years. A strict meat-only diet once eased his condition, but she said it no longer provides enough relief.

“Praying we can treat him quickly and the medical community can be more aware of CIRS and building codes can change so we can get fresh air indoors,” she wrote.

Not linked to past struggles

Mikhaila stressed that her father’s current health issues are unrelated to akathisia, a condition tied to benzodiazepine withdrawal. Peterson spoke about that difficult period in 2020, when he underwent detox treatment in Russia. He has since said he is off all medication.

In recent years, Peterson has drawn attention for his emotional interviews and visible weeping. According to his daughter, the pain caused by CIRS explains those reactions, as well as cancelled shows and his worn-out appearance at times.

Support from allies

Friends and colleagues have shared messages of encouragement. Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro posted:
“Dr. Peterson is not just a mentor and colleague, he is a dear friend. I am praying for his speedy recovery and sending my best to his family.”

Shapiro’s media outlet also urged supporters to send prayers, calling Peterson a figure who has helped “millions of people across the globe navigate the toughest of circumstances.”

Looking ahead

For now, Peterson plans to focus on recovery. His daughter says the family hopes doctors can stabilize his health so he can eventually return to his work.
