Dinosaurs once inspired awe. Now, they barely turn heads. In a world saturated with CGI-driven spectacles, audiences have grown used to prehistoric creatures stomping across the big screen. That’s exactly why the team behind Jurassic World Rebirth—including producer Frank Marshall and legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg—felt the franchise needed a shift. Instead of rekindling love for dinosaurs, they set out to reignite fear.

Ahead of a new trailer release, Vanity Fair shared an exclusive first look at Jurassic World: Rebirth, featuring interviews with stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, along with director Gareth Edwards, producer Frank Marshall, and writer David Koepp. The film promises a fresh take on the franchise and take thrills to the next level.

Speaking to Vanity Fair Producer Frank Marshall revealed that after six films, audiences had become too familiar with dinosaurs. The challenge was to make them frightening again. “I’ve always said that CGI is an amazing tool, but it can make filmmakers lazy,” Marshall explained. “The danger has to feel real.” This philosophy guided the creation of Rebirth, with new environments, mutated dinosaurs, and high-stakes action.

A New Setting, a New Threat

Unlike its predecessors, Rebirth transports viewers to a previously unseen part of the Jurassic universe—an isolated island near the equator. This isn’t another dinosaur park gone wrong. It’s an untamed landscape hiding creatures never meant to exist.

The story follows a recovery team on a mission to retrieve genetic material that could unlock a groundbreaking medical cure. Led by Johansson’s Zora Bennett, a former special operative, the team ventures to an equatorial island—the site of a long-abandoned Jurassic Park research facility. However, the creatures left behind have not only survived but evolved into even deadlier forms.

“These are the dinosaurs that didn’t work,” Marshall revealed. “They’re based on real research, but with unexpected mutations.”

Imagine the worst nightmares of evolution—giant predators built not by nature, but by science gone too far.

A Lost Scene from the Original Novel Comes to Life

Marshall hinted that screenwriter David Koepp, who penned the original Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World, drew inspiration from an unused scene from Michael Crichton’s novel. One particular sequence involves characters silently paddling through a lagoon, only to realize too late that a Tyrannosaurus rex is stalking them underwater.

A Director with a Monster Movie Pedigree

Gareth Edwards, known for Rogue One and Godzilla (2014), helms this terrifying new chapter. Edwards described his approach as “When you make a creature, you take all the monsters you love and mix them together.”

His inspiration was The Skeletal Terror of Alien, the menacing bulk of Star Wars’ Rancor, and Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park T. rex. This fusion has resulted in a terrifying new apex predator, teased in the upcoming trailer.

Edwards also sees Jurassic Park for what it truly is. “It’s a horror film in disguise,” he said. The original’s T. rex breakout scene left a deep mark on him. “It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history.” Rebirth aims to recapture that fear.

A High-Stakes Heist with a Prehistoric Twist

The plot of the film ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ is part survival thriller, part heist movie. Rupert Friend plays a businessman whose company has discovered a potential cure for heart disease—but it requires DNA from the three largest dinosaurs on land, sea, and air. Johansson’s Zora Bennett, a former special operative turned freelancer, leads the mission to retrieve the genetic material from the island.

Johansson, a longtime Jurassic Park fan, was thrilled to join the franchise. In her interview, she said, “This was a dream project for me,”. “I was obsessed with the first film. I even had a Jurassic Park tent in my bedroom as a kid,” she shared. Her character, Zora, is a battle-hardened leader, but she isn’t just in it for survival—her mission is deeply personal.

A Team in Peril

The dynamic between the three leads echoes classic adventure films. Jonathan Bailey plays Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist with a connection to Sam Neill’s iconic Dr. Alan Grant. Meanwhile, Mahershala Ali’s Duncan Kincaid is a black-ops expert with a troubled past, drawn back into danger for one last mission. Their dynamic mirrors the trio from Jaws, another Spielberg classic.

Ali saw the project as a challenge. “Can I exist in something this big?” he wondered. He aimed to bring heart and authenticity to his character, even amid action-heavy sequences involving green screens and tennis balls standing in for dinosaurs. “The best blockbuster characters always feel real,” he said.

Of course, not everyone makes it out alive. Ali put it bluntly: “There’s no version of this film where everyone survives.”

A Return to Spielbergian Wonder and Terror

For Edwards, Rebirth is more than just another sequel. It’s a love letter to Spielberg’s greatest hits. “The three films we looked at were Jaws, Indiana Jones, and the original Jurassic Park,” he said. One key sequence even takes place in a towering temple-like ruin, drawing inspiration from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Jonathan Bailey prepares to extract material from a dinosaur egg as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis.

With intense action, terrifying new creatures, and a return to the franchise’s horror roots, Jurassic World: Rebirth aims to reinvigorate the saga. Edwards promises a mix of Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park—delivering not just nostalgia but a pulse-pounding adventure for a new generation.

The trailer is launched today, Feb.05, 2025, and we will learn more when the production hits cinemas on July 02.
