Angela Paxton, wife of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, announced on Thursday that she has filed for divorce. Their 38-year marriage ends as Ken Paxton prepares to challenge Sen. John Cornyn in the upcoming Republican Senate primary.
Divorce Follows "Recent Discoveries"
Angela Paxton, who serves as a Texas state senator, said on social media that she made the decision after “recent discoveries,” but didn’t provide details. In the legal filing, she accused her husband of adultery and said they stopped living together around June 1, 2024.
“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” she wrote. “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”
Paxton Responds Publicly
Ken Paxton also shared a post online. He blamed “countless political attacks and public scrutiny” for the stress in his life. He said both he and Angela had chosen to “start a new chapter.”
“I could not be more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with,” he added. “I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren.”
Political Impact on Senate Race
The news adds a new twist to Paxton’s plans to unseat Sen. Cornyn. The divorce could damage his image, especially as Democrats eye this Senate seat as a potential opportunity.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a strong statement against Paxton. Its communications director called his actions “repulsive and disgusting” and expressed support for Angela Paxton during what they called a difficult time.
A Controversial Political Career
Ken Paxton has been a well-known conservative figure in Texas politics. He’s often aligned with Donald Trump and made headlines by suing Democratic presidents. But his time in office has been full of controversy.
In 2023, the Texas House impeached him after he requested over $3 million in state funds to settle a lawsuit. The lawsuit came from former staffers who accused him of taking bribes and abusing his power.
Angela Paxton attended his impeachment trial, where allegations also included an affair with a woman linked to a real estate developer. Though she was in the Senate chamber, she was not allowed to vote. The Senate later acquitted Ken Paxton.
Cornyn Reacts Quietly
Sen. John Cornyn kept his response short. When asked about the divorce filing, he said, “Seems like a private matter.” However, his campaign later shared the divorce news along with the GOP committee’s sharp criticism.
As Paxton faces more personal and political troubles, this divorce may affect his run for the Senate.
