Kesha has made a bold comeback with her latest single "Joyride," signaling her debut as an independent artist since parting ways with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records and RCA. Presented at Brooklyn's Planet Pride, this track diverges from the experimental vibe of last year's "Gag Order," which delved into more artistic realms. "Joyride" channels the upbeat essence of her earlier hits like "Tik Tok" and "We R Who We R," featuring memorable lyrics such as "You want kids? Well I am mother."
In a significant move for her career, Kesha's departure from Kemosabe and Vector Management was announced by Variety in December. This decision followed the resolution of several legal disputes with her former producer, Dr. Luke, spanning almost a decade but settled outside of court. Both Kesha and Dr. Luke addressed the matter via social media, with Kesha affirming her intention to "close the chapter on this phase of my life and begin anew."
During her tenure with Kemosabe, Kesha released five full-length albums and three EPs, despite seeking release from her contract due to allegations of sexual assault against Dr. Luke, which he refuted. She later acknowledged gaps in her memory regarding the incidents.
In a triumphant declaration on Twitter in March, Kesha wrote, "First day I’ve owned my voice in 19 years. Welcome." Embracing her newfound freedom, she recently marked the occasion with a celebratory performance at WeHo’s Outloud Fest to kick off Pride weekend. Addressing the crowd passionately, she proclaimed, "This is my first show as a free motherfucking woman," while debuting two fresh tracks, "Mother" and "Freedom."
