Krispy Kreme doughnuts are coming back to Calgary after nearly 17 years. The new shop will open on June 3 at 9629 Macleod Trail S.W. Doors open at 7 a.m. Fans of the classic glazed doughnuts can finally enjoy their favorite treat again in the city.
History of Krispy Kreme in Canada
Krispy Kreme started over 80 years ago. The first Canadian store opened in 2001 in Mississauga, Ontario. Calgary got its first location in March 2004 at Sunridge Mall. The shop was popular but closed in August 2008. Now the brand is ready to return with a fresh new store.
Excitement for the Opening
Levi Hetrick, Krispy Kreme Canada’s chief growth officer, said, “We’re anticipating a little bit of a crowd. So we’re excited about it … it’s going to be a really fun day.” Murry Felt, the new store’s general manager, called it a “doughnut theatre.” Customers will watch doughnuts being made fresh on conveyor belts inside the kitchen. “It certainly creates the anticipation,” Felt said. “The kids looking through that window ready to get their treat.”
Planning for Big Crowds
Felt doesn’t know exactly how many people will come on opening day. However, the store is ready for long lines. They are working with the Calgary Police to help manage traffic on Macleod Trail. Felt shared stories from other Krispy Kreme openings where people camped out overnight to be the first customers.
Fresh Doughnuts Made on Site
The Calgary shop will be a “theatre factory hub.” This means all doughnuts are made right there. The line can make over 200 dozen doughnuts every hour. This will be the only place in Calgary where doughnuts are produced, and the fresh treats will be sent to other smaller cafes in the city.
Krispy Kreme’s Growth and Challenges
Krispy Kreme has 20 shops across Canada and locations in 40 countries. The brand is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hetrick explained that Krispy Kreme left Calgary before due to issues with the brand worldwide, not because of low demand. “We’ve heard from our fans locally that they want us here, we’re happy to be back,” he said.
He also mentioned that tariffs make some imports from the U.S. more expensive. But opening this new facility created 120 local jobs and ensures fresh doughnuts are made daily in Calgary.
Summary
Krispy Kreme is opening a new shop in Calgary after nearly 17 years. The store opens June 3 and will make fresh doughnuts on site. The company expects big crowds and is ready for traffic control. This return marks a fresh start with local jobs and daily fresh doughnuts for Calgarians to enjoy.
