Kylian Mbappé's representative has firmly rejected reports from Swedish media that allege the French soccer star is being investigated for rape. These reports surfaced after Mbappé visited a nightclub and stayed at a hotel in Stockholm on October 10. Outlets, including the Swedish public broadcaster SVT and CNN affiliate Expressen, cited police documents suggesting that Mbappé is “suspected on reasonable grounds of rape.”
In Sweden, the term “suspicion on reasonable grounds” indicates that there are certain circumstances suggesting that a person may have committed an act. Following the media reports, Swedish prosecutors confirmed that a criminal report had been filed concerning the alleged incident, but they did not disclose any specific individuals involved. When asked for more details, prosecutors stated that they could not provide additional information at this time.
Responding to the allegations, the 25-year-old soccer star took to social media to denounce the claims as “FAKE NEWS.” This came after a similar report from French outlet RMC Sport, which has since deleted its post. Mbappé’s representative issued a statement to the media, emphasizing that these accusations are “totally false and irresponsible.” The representative condemned the spread of such rumours, asserting that Mbappé would not allow his integrity and reputation to be harmed by baseless accusations. The statement also indicated that legal action would be pursued against those involved in what they described as “moral harassment” and “defamatory treatment” of Mbappé.
Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, Mbappé’s lawyer, also defended him on French television, labelling the reports as a “slanderous denunciation.” She noted that despite the allegations, Mbappé attended training on Tuesday and seemed “absolutely calm.” However, she acknowledged that the situation has left him feeling “flabbergasted” and confused by the media frenzy surrounding the claims.
Canu-Bernard added that if the situation continues without resolution, Mbappé would be willing to cooperate with investigators. She expressed hope that the media storm would settle soon and that the truth would come to light. As for Mbappé’s upcoming commitments, he recently travelled to Stockholm and was absent from France's last two UEFA Nations League matches, where the team secured victories over Israel and Belgium. His next chance to play may come when Real Madrid faces Celta Vigo in La Liga this Saturday.
Ahead of the match, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti addressed the speculation surrounding Mbappé, stating he would not discuss rumours and insisted that the player was unaffected by the media coverage. He explained that the days off were planned for all players and noted that each athlete is free to manage their time as they see fit, highlighting that he had taken a personal trip without needing to seek permission.
As the story unfolds, Mbappé and his team remain steadfast in their commitment to counter the allegations and protect his reputation.
