In a statement to the Associated Press, Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, indicated that Payne had jumped from his room's balcony. Police were alerted to an emergency around 5 p.m. local time concerning a man who appeared to be under the influence of substances. The hotel manager described the situation as urgent, mentioning that Payne was inebriated and causing chaos in his room.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical service, announced that an investigation was underway to determine the exact circumstances of Payne's death, including an autopsy.

Payne had openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism, having shared a video in July 2023 where he revealed that he had been sober for six months after treatment. His representatives have not yet responded to inquiries regarding his passing.

Following the news, many One Direction fans gathered outside the Casa Sur Hotel, forming long lines and creating a makeshift memorial with candles and flowers. Young women expressed their sorrow as they recorded their tributes. "I didn’t think he was going to die so young," said Isabella Milesi, 21.

One Direction formed in 2010 on the British singing competition "The X Factor," where Payne, who had previously auditioned, rejoined the show at 16. Along with bandmates Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, he became part of one of the most successful boy bands despite not winning the competition. Known for hits like “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Story of My Life,” the band gained a massive following known as “Directioners.”

After the group disbanded in 2016, Payne embarked on a solo career, releasing notable tracks like “Strip That Down”.

Payne leaves behind his 7-year-old son, Bear Grey, as well as his parents and two older sisters. His passing has left a profound impact on fans and the music community alike, with many reflecting on his significant contributions to pop music and his personal struggles.
