Lindsey Halligan, a close aide to Donald Trump, has been appointed as the new U.S. attorney in Virginia after the previous prosecutor was dismissed for refusing to bring charges against a political rival. CNN
Lindsey Halligan, a longtime aide and close ally of President Donald Trump, has stepped in as the new U.S. attorney for Virginia’s Eastern District. The appointment follows the sudden removal of Erik Siebert, who left after growing political tension over a case involving one of Trump’s main political rivals.
According to a source familiar with the change, Halligan took over just days after Siebert’s departure. Siebert had faced heavy pressure from the White House to file charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The push came despite investigators finding too little evidence to support a case.
Political Pressure Builds in High-Stakes Office
The Eastern District of Virginia has been at the centre of several sensitive investigations. Siebert’s team had also been looking into whether former FBI Director James Comey misled Congress in his past testimony.
The new appointment gives another of Trump’s personal lawyers a key position of power. The office Halligan now leads has handled some of the country’s most politically charged cases. Many of these are issues Trump has openly demanded action on.
Siebert Forced Out Amid White House Frustration
Erik Siebert, who once served as interim U.S. attorney, had faced increasing pressure from senior officials. The White House had wanted faster movement on cases linked to Trump’s political opponents. Sources say Siebert resisted that pressure, arguing that the evidence in the James investigation was incomplete.
Despite his concerns, Siebert was pushed out late last week. The change created a leadership gap that the White House filled quickly with one of Trump’s most loyal defenders.
Halligan’s Legal Path and White House Trust
Halligan worked as one of Trump’s personal lawyers during the investigation into classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago home. Though she has never served as a prosecutor, Trump has often praised her legal skills and loyalty.
In a social media post, the president celebrated her new role, saying she “represented me (and WON!) in the disgraceful Democrat Documents Hoax.” He added that Halligan is “extremely intelligent, fearless,” and predicted she will be “absolutely OUTSTANDING” as the new U.S. attorney.
Until Halligan’s official swearing-in, conservative lawyer Mary “Maggie” Cleary temporarily led the office. Cleary has claimed she was falsely accused of being present during the January 6 Capitol riot.
A Voice Against “Woke” Culture
Halligan has recently taken on other assignments from the White House, including efforts to remove what Trump called “woke” ideas and “anti-American propaganda” from major U.S. institutions.
Last month, Halligan echoed those views during a television interview. She criticized what she described as an “overemphasis on slavery” at Smithsonian museums. “We should be able to take our kids, our students, through the Smithsonian and feel proud when we leave,” she said. “There’s a lot of history to our country — both positive and negative — but we need to keep moving forward; we can’t just keep focusing on the negative.”
A New Chapter Begins
Halligan’s arrival marks another shift in the Justice Department under Trump’s leadership. Her appointment shows how the White House continues to place trusted insiders in powerful legal roles. As the political climate grows more divided, her actions in this position will likely draw close national attention.
