Thousands of London residents saw their lights return Sunday evening after a large hydro outage disrupted homes and businesses. Crews worked quickly, restoring electricity to most customers by 5 p.m. Only a small number, fewer than 50, still waited for power by 7:30 p.m.
Areas Hit Hardest
The outage affected neighborhoods across Central London, Masonville, Medway, Sunningdale, Oakridge, and parts of west London. Families and businesses in these areas faced hours without electricity on a hot summer day.
Cause of the Outage
London Hydro confirmed the outage happened because of heat-related equipment failure. Intense temperatures placed heavy strain on power systems, leading to the breakdown. “Extreme heat can stress our equipment, and we’re working to address that,” said a spokesperson.
Efforts to Restore Service
London Hydro and Hydro One teams worked side by side throughout the day. Repair crews inspected and replaced damaged components, ensuring power came back safely. By late evening, nearly all affected homes had electricity again.
Residents Cope With Heat
Many residents dealt with the outage by staying in shaded areas, visiting friends, or using battery-powered fans. For some, it was a reminder of how dependent daily life is on electricity. “It’s amazing how much you notice when it’s gone,” said one Oakridge resident.
Looking Ahead
Utility companies plan to review the incident and improve equipment resilience for future heatwaves. Officials encouraged residents to prepare for possible outages by keeping emergency kits ready, especially during extreme weather.
