A forgotten painting of Fortress Louisbourg has resurfaced at a Nova Scotia airport, leaving staff with many unanswered questions. The large artwork, depicting the historic Cape Breton fortress as it looked in the 18th century, was recently found in storage at the JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport.

Airport employees are puzzled by the discovery. No one knows who created the painting, when it was made, or why it ended up at the airport.

“We know it’s the Fortress of Louisbourg, but that is all we know about it,” said Courtney Davis, the airport’s marketing and communications manager.

A Forgotten Artwork

Davis believes the painting once hung in the airport’s terminal long ago before being placed in storage and forgotten. However, there are no records explaining its origin. The mystery deepens because the artwork has no signature, making it difficult to trace the artist.

“We know that it was displayed somewhere in the terminal, but we don’t know exactly where,” Davis explained. “It’s a beautiful piece. Someone put a lot of time and effort into it. We would love to find out who created it.”

The rediscovered painting has sparked curiosity beyond the airport. Locals have taken to social media and radio to uncover the artist’s identity. Many have shared their theories, but so far, no solid leads have emerged.

At a radio station in nearby Membertou First Nation, host Tashia Lee has been actively searching for clues. She hopes that by sharing the story, someone will come forward with information.

“Nothing yet, but I keep looking every day,” Lee said. “I’ve pinned the post to the top of our page, hoping someone will recognize the painting and help us solve the mystery.”

More Recent Than It Looks

Although the painting portrays Fortress Louisbourg as it appeared centuries ago, Davis suspects it was created in more recent years. However, without an artist’s signature or any documentation, the exact date remains unknown.

As the search continues, airport staff and local residents hope to solve this artistic mystery. Until then, the painting stands as a beautiful but unexplained piece of history.
