The Maldives has decided to ban Israeli passport holders from entering the country due to the ongoing war in Gaza. This move was confirmed by the president's office on Wednesday, with the government accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has strongly denied these accusations.

The country's president, Mohamed Muizzu, ratified a new amendment to the Immigration Act, which was passed by parliament the previous day. This change explicitly prohibits Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives, a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches and luxury resorts.

The president’s office stated that this decision reflects the government's strong stance against what it calls “atrocities” and ongoing “acts of genocide” by Israel. The statement emphasizes the government's commitment to defending the Palestinian people during this conflict.

Israel, however, has repeatedly rejected the accusation of genocide. The Israeli government asserts that it has followed international law and has the right to protect itself, especially after Hamas launched an attack from Gaza on October 7, 2023, which led to the current war. Israel maintains that its actions are a response to the attack and are part of its self-defense efforts.

The accusation of genocide has also been echoed by other organizations. In December 2023, Amnesty International published a report accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa has also taken the matter to the International Court of Justice at the United Nations, but Israel has continued to deny any wrongdoing.

This decision by the Maldives was first proposed by President Muizzu in June 2024, after a recommendation from the cabinet. The move prompted the Israeli foreign ministry to advise its citizens to avoid traveling to the Maldives, which is a major tourist destination. The Maldives economy heavily relies on tourism, which makes up about 21% of the country’s GDP. In 2024, the country earned $5.6 billion from tourism and is expecting to make around $5 billion in the current year.

The ban on Israeli passport holders comes as tensions continue to rise between Israel and the Palestinians. While the Maldives government stands firm on its position, the situation remains fluid, and the international community continues to debate the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
