The Pittsburgh Penguins have brought back a familiar face. Legendary goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a professional tryout contract with the team, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas confirmed.

The 40-year-old goaltender will hit the ice with Pittsburgh at practice on Friday, September 26. He is also expected to appear in parts of the Penguins’ preseason matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, September 27, at PPG Paints Arena.

A Hero’s Return to Pittsburgh

Kyle Dubas expressed the organization’s pride in welcoming back Fleury.
“The Penguins are honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to Pittsburgh,” Dubas said. “He’s admired across the hockey world, but his connection with our fans and this city goes far beyond his accolades.”

Dubas called this moment a “full-circle” celebration for Fleury, the fans, and his family.

Three-Time Stanley Cup Champion

Marc-Andre Fleury’s career is nothing short of legendary. A three-time Stanley Cup Champion (2009, 2016, 2017), all with the Penguins, Fleury has been one of the most consistent goaltenders in NHL history.

Over his 22-year career spanning Pittsburgh, Vegas, Chicago, and Minnesota, Fleury played in 1,051 games. His career record stands at 575-339-97 with 76 shutouts. He is second only to Martin Brodeur in both games played and wins among goaltenders.

Record-Breaking Numbers

Fleury’s career includes:

  • 15 seasons with 20+ wins.
  • Nine 30-win seasons.
  • Two 40-win campaigns.

Few goalies have matched such consistency across two decades.

Awards and Recognition

The veteran goaltender has earned numerous accolades:

  • Four NHL All-Star Game selections (2011, 2015, 2018, 2019).
  • A Second-Team NHL All-Star selection (2021).
  • The Vezina Trophy (2021), honoring the league’s best goalie.
  • The William M. Jennings Trophy (2021), awarded for fewest goals allowed.

His remarkable play cemented him as one of the greatest goaltenders of his era.

A Pittsburgh Icon

Fleury’s longest and most memorable stint came with the Penguins, where he played 13 seasons from 2003 to 2017.

He holds nearly every major goaltending record in franchise history:

  • Games played: 691.
  • Wins: 375.
  • Shutouts: 44.
  • Goals-against average: 2.58 (best in team history).
  • Save percentage: .912 (second-best in team history with 100+ games).

His playoff dominance is just as impressive. With 115 games played, 62 wins, and 10 shutouts, Fleury ranks first in Penguins postseason history.

Beloved by Fans and Teammates

Fleury wasn’t just known for his saves. His personality and sportsmanship earned him many team awards:

  • Three Players’ Player Awards.
  • Two Good Guy Awards.
  • Two Team MVPs.
  • Multiple community service honors.

His connection with Pittsburgh fans was always genuine, making him one of the most beloved players to ever wear black and gold.

Drafted First Overall

Fleury’s story began in Pittsburgh. Selected first overall in the 2003 NHL Draft, he became only the third goalie in NHL history to earn that honor.

A Full-Circle Moment

Now, 22 years after his NHL debut, Marc-Andre Fleury returns to the team that drafted him, won championships with him, and still chants his name.

For Penguins fans, this professional tryout contract is more than just a signing. It’s a celebration of a career, a reunion with a legend, and a reminder of the golden memories Fleury created in Pittsburgh.
