Marc Garneau, the first Canadian to travel into space and a respected public servant, passed away on June 4, 2025, at the age of 76. His family confirmed he died peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by loved ones.
From the Navy to Outer Space
Garneau was born in Quebec City on February 23, 1949. He began his career in the Royal Canadian Navy before making history in 1984 by becoming the first Canadian astronaut to fly in space. His journey inspired generations and opened new doors for Canada’s space program.
A New Role in Politics
After his space missions, Garneau entered politics. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2008. He represented the Montreal riding of Westmount--Ville-Marie, and later Notre-Dame-de-Grâce--Westmount, until his retirement in 2023. During his time in office, he held key roles, including Minister of Transport and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In his final speech in Parliament, Garneau thanked his staff, colleagues, and family. “Nothing is perfect in this world,” he said, “but I would like to think that I always did my best to try to make it better.”
Tributes from All Walks of Life
Garneau’s wife, Pam, shared a heartfelt message after his passing. “Marc faced his final days with the same strength, clarity, and grace that defined his life,” she wrote. She also thanked the medical team and everyone who showed kindness during his illness.
Lawmakers paused for a moment of silence in the House of Commons to honor him. Many praised his years of service and the example he set.
Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk expressed deep sorrow, calling Garneau a lifelong hero. “He was the first, he was so historic… It’s just a really sad moment,” he said.
Remembered by the Space Community
Garneau’s contributions to Canada’s space exploration went beyond his missions. He also served as the head of Canada’s space agency, where he played a key role in shaping future programs. His leadership and dedication were remembered by those who worked with him.
A statement from the space agency described him as a thoughtful, principled person who inspired all Canadians. “His integrity and generosity of spirit touched everyone who had the privilege to work with him,” the agency wrote.
National Leaders Pay Their Respects
Many public figures shared their thoughts on Garneau’s legacy. The Prime Minister called him a naval officer, astronaut, and dedicated public servant who brought duty and honor to every role.
Another former Prime Minister posted a tribute on social media, sharing a photo with Garneau and saying he had looked up to him since the 1980s. “Marc truly embodied and exemplified Canadian greatness throughout his whole life,” he wrote.
Local MP Anna Gainey called him “a true pioneer and champion.” She said his legacy of public service would never be forgotten.
