Marcus Bagwell, better known by his wrestling moniker Buff Bagwell of the World Championship Wrestling.
Wrestling icon Marcus Bagwell, famously known as Buff Bagwell from the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) era, has undergone a life-changing surgery. His left leg was amputated above the knee following a long and painful medical journey stemming from a traumatic accident in 2020.
A Tough Battle Ends in Surgery
Bagwell’s friend and longtime supporter, Steve Stasiak, confirmed the news in an emotional Facebook post. The surgery, performed on Thursday morning, marked the end of a five-year struggle to save the limb.
“I’ve seen Buff in every light—onstage and behind the curtain. This is heartbreaking,” Stasiak wrote. He noted that the leg never healed properly after a car accident in 2020. Despite Bagwell’s relentless efforts and medical interventions, the damage was irreversible.
“He gave it everything he had. Now begins a different kind of fight,” Stasiak added.
The 2020 Crash That Changed Everything
The turning point in Bagwell’s health journey occurred in August 2020. He was recovering from foot surgery and a minor meniscus tear in his knee. Then, disaster struck. He lost control of his Chevy Tahoe and crashed into a building.
Though no one else was hurt, the crash caused part of the structure to collapse, crushing Bagwell’s kneecap. The result was a seven-week hospital stay and an astounding 21 surgeries.
These physical injuries soon spiraled into emotional turmoil.
The pain and trauma pushed Bagwell into alcoholism, an addiction he later described as “the deepest, darkest” period of his life.
Finding Strength in Sobriety
Bagwell has since turned his life around. He entered rehab in August 2022 and will mark three years of sobriety on August 27, 2025.
Just hours before the amputation surgery, Bagwell appeared on his YouTube channel alongside his fiancée, Stacy. He opened up about the emotional weight of the decision.
“This is the result of a five-year battle to save my leg,” he said, candidly. Though clearly emotional, Bagwell appeared calm, reflective, and even hopeful.
Support Pours in From Wrestling Fans
The wrestling community, especially longtime WCW fans, responded with overwhelming support. Comments on Bagwell’s video were filled with praise for his bravery and honesty.
One fan wrote: “New gimmick—Bionic Buff! You’ll feel better and stronger. Just stay clean and infection-free. Love ya.”
Another added: “The way you’re handling this—like it’s just the weather—is so admirable. Praying for a fast recovery.”
A Legend Beyond the Ring
From 1991 to 2001, Buff Bagwell was one of WCW’s most charismatic stars. Known for his flashy style and magnetic presence, he was a standout in an era of wrestling that defined pop culture.
But as Stasiak emphasized, the real strength of Bagwell isn’t found in his in-ring persona—it’s in his resilience as a person.
“Buff made you look. He made you care. But beyond the lights, he’s a fighter in every sense of the word,” Stasiak shared. “If you’re reading this, send a little love out into the world for Buff.
A prayer, a thought—something real.”
What’s Next for Buff Bagwell?
Though he’s now facing life with a prosthetic, Bagwell remains determined. This isn’t the end of his story. It’s a powerful new chapter. With his sobriety intact and unwavering fan support behind him, Marcus “Buff” Bagwell is proving that true legends don’t just shine in the ring—they rise above it.
