When Mariners infielder Cole Young took the field for his major league debut, it was the realization of a dream years in the making. The 21-year-old, who was a standout prospect in the Mariners’ farm system, made a memorable entrance by delivering a game-winning RBI in extra innings.
From Futures Game to T-Mobile Park
Last July, Young appeared in the Futures Game in Arlington, Texas. At that time, he was recently promoted to Double-A Arkansas. The event gave him a glimpse of what his future might hold — the bright lights of a major league stadium.
“Since that game,” Young said, “I kind of imagined myself being in this park and debuting.”
That vision became reality on Saturday night when Young was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to join the Mariners.
Walk-Off Hero in First Game
Not only did Young start at second base, but he also came up in the eighth spot in the batting order. His first major league hit was a fielder’s choice in the 11th inning. That hit drove in the winning run, sealing a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Young’s clutch hit was something even he hadn’t imagined for his debut. “Usually, it’s in the World Series,” he joked. “But I never imagined in my debut I’d hit a walk-off.”
The emotional moment left him sleepless the night before, thinking through every possible scenario — except a walk-off win.
A Season of Strong Performance
Young’s promotion was no surprise given his strong showing in Triple-A. This season, he hit .277 with an .853 OPS for the Tacoma Rainiers. May was a particularly hot month for him — he batted .366 with a .467 on-base percentage. He also racked up 10 doubles, three triples, and five home runs that month alone.
Manager Dan Wilson praised Young’s bat, saying, “He’s been on fire down in Tacoma and has swung the bat very, very well. It’s exciting to have him here and part of the club today.”
Family Celebration in Seattle
The debut was just as special for Young’s family. His mother, father, brother, and best friend all flew in from the Pittsburgh area to witness the big moment.
Young shared the news of his call-up with his family during Tacoma’s game the night before. The announcement caught them by surprise, especially his mother.
“She was just like screaming on the phone,” Young recalled. “I started crying. I think that’s when it really hit me. Then I called some of my friends and they were in shock.”
Nervous Start, Strong Finish
As expected, Young admitted he was nervous during the first innings of his debut. But after getting his first hit, he settled into the game. The energy peaked after his game-winning RBI, when teammates mobbed him beyond first base in celebration.
“It’s been an unreal 24 hours,” Young said, still processing the whirlwind experience.
Looking Ahead
With his impressive start, Young is excited for what’s next. He’s eager to soak in every moment and prove he belongs at the major league level. His journey from a hopeful Futures Game participant to a Mariners walk-off hero is just beginning.
Young’s debut is a shining example of how hard work and belief can turn dreams into reality — right here at T-Mobile Park.
