Porter Martone is living a dream few 18-year-olds can imagine. The Brampton forward, who’s projected to go top-10 in the 2025 NHL Draft, is soaking in a once-in-a-lifetime experience with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship.

After receiving an unexpected call-up to the Canadian squad, Martone didn’t hesitate. “It was a no-brainer,” he said. And why not? The chance to train, play, and learn alongside NHL icons like Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon isn’t something that comes around often — especially before you’ve even been drafted.

From Shock to Spotlight

When the invitation came, Martone was stunned. “It’s surreal,” he admitted. “I’ve dreamed of playing in the NHL. Now I’m sharing the room with guys like Crosby.”

Initially brought in for pre-tournament practices and games, Martone impressed the coaches enough to earn a permanent roster spot. He replaced Bo Horvat, who exited the tournament early due to injury. Martone is set to make his official debut against Sweden at Avicii Arena.

Big Numbers, Bigger Potential

Martone's OHL stats speak volumes. He racked up 98 points (37 goals, 61 assists) in 57 games for Brampton. That performance earned him the No. 6 spot on NHL Central Scouting’s final list of North American skaters.

At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, he brings a rare mix of size, speed, and skill. “He wears his compete on his sleeve,” said Dan Marr, NHL Central Scouting's director. “He’s eliminated doubts about his skating and shown he's more skilled than people give him credit for.”

A Quick Learner in Good Company

Martone has already made his mark in the pre-tournament phase. He tallied a goal and an assist in two games against Austria and Hungary. But his real growth is happening off the ice.

“He’s one of the last guys off the rink every day,” said Crosby. “He works hard, and you can tell he’s trying to learn everything he can.”

Martone shares a locker room with Barrett Hayton and Tyson Foerster — more pros he can learn from. The young forward is aware of the privilege he’s been granted. “Not many 18-year-olds get this chance,” he said. “I’m lucky, and I want to make the most of it.”

Soaking Up the NHL Experience

Canada coach Dean Evason, also the Columbus Blue Jackets head coach, believes Martone is gaining more than just ice time. “It’s an education you can’t put a price on,” he said.

Evason encouraged Martone to observe everything — not just the play but the professionalism of stars like Crosby and MacKinnon. “From practice to off days, how they prepare and carry themselves — it’s all part of becoming a pro.”

Martone is taking that advice seriously. “You see Crosby’s routine, how focused MacKinnon is,” he said. “They’ve been great with me, talking about their careers and giving advice.”

Next Stop: NHL Draft

All eyes now turn to the 2025 Upper Deck NHL Draft, set for June 27-28 at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. With the New York Islanders holding the No. 1 pick, followed by San Jose, Chicago, and Utah, Martone could be hearing his name early.

Macklin Celebrini, the No. 1 pick from 2024, believes Martone is ready. “He’s mature, driven, and eager to learn,” said Celebrini. “This experience will only help him as he steps into the spotlight.”

Martone Rising

Porter Martone is more than a draft prospect. He’s a young player making the most of an incredible opportunity. Surrounded by NHL legends, he’s learning, growing, and getting ready for the next step in his hockey journey. If this tournament is any sign, Martone’s future in the NHL looks very bright.
