A surprise Marvel connection has emerged from the hit vampire thriller Sinners. During a recent interview, producer Sev Ohanian revealed that the film includes costumes originally made for Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot. These outfits, designed by Ruth Carter, gave Sinners an unexpected link to the Marvel universe.
Marvel’s Unused Wardrobe
Ruth Carter, the award-winning costume designer, had created a range of vintage outfits for Blade before the project stalled. At one point, Marvel’s version of Blade was set to include scenes from a historical era — the same period in which Sinners is set. When that idea got shelved, the costumes were left unused in a warehouse.
“We had to shoot Sinners quickly,” said Ohanian. “Ruth had all these period-accurate clothes ready to go. Marvel let us buy them for a good price, which helped us stay on schedule.”
This unexpected wardrobe swap allowed Sinners to benefit from Marvel’s unused materials — a rare behind-the-scenes detail that only recently came to light.
Who Wore What
Ohanian explained that background characters in Sinners wore many of the repurposed costumes. The main actors, however, wore new outfits designed specifically for the film. Still, the blend worked so well that audiences never noticed the Marvel connection — until now.
“It’s a fun Marvel Easter egg,” Ohanian said. “People watching probably had no idea where those costumes came from.”
Sinners Becomes a Breakout Hit
Sinners hit theaters on April 18 and quickly became one of the biggest surprises of 2025. In a year dominated by sequels and franchise movies, Sinners stood out as an original story. It raked in $364 million worldwide and currently ranks as the eighth highest-grossing movie of the year. It’s also the only one in the top ten not based on an existing brand or universe.
Audiences embraced the film’s fresh take on vampire horror, while critics praised its visual style, suspense, and originality. Now, the Marvel costume backstory adds another layer of curiosity and appeal.
Blade Still on Hold
Marvel’s Blade reboot was first announced in 2019, with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali set to star. Since then, the film has faced delays and changes behind the scenes. However, Ali says he’s still ready for the role.
“Call Marvel,” he joked during a recent film premiere. “I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”
Fans remain hopeful that Blade will finally make it to screens. In the meantime, some of its style has already been seen — just in a very different vampire film.
