Christopher Nolan has unveiled the first official trailer for The Odyssey, offering a sweeping glimpse of his next cinematic epic. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero whose long journey home has inspired stories for thousands of years.

The trailer, released by Universal Pictures on December 22, marks the first time footage has been shared outside movie theaters. It is Nolan’s first project since Oppenheimer, which swept major awards in 2023.

A Myth Told On A Massive Scale

Nolan’s The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem and follows Odysseus after the Trojan War. The story traces his dangerous, years-long journey back to his homeland, Ithaca.

The trailer shows flashes of war, including the iconic Trojan Horse. It then shifts to Odysseus at sea, battling isolation and uncertainty as he struggles to survive.

The tone is epic, restrained, and immersive.

A Teaser That Set The Stage

Before this release, Universal had shared a brief teaser only in cinemas. That footage introduced Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son.

In that scene, Telemachus searches for answers about his missing father. Characters played by Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Robert Pattinson speak of rumours surrounding Odysseus’ fate.

“Some say he’s rich -poor - and some say he’s imprisoned,” Bernthal says. The teaser ended with Odysseus drifting alone at sea.

Shot Entirely In Imax

Nolan’s The Odyssey is also a technical milestone. The film is the first feature ever shot completely using newly developed IMAX film cameras.

Nolan filmed across several countries, aiming to capture the scale and realism of the ancient world. The director is known for pushing cinematic technology, and this project continues that tradition.

A Cast Filled With Familiar Faces

The film features one of Nolan’s largest ensemble casts. Alongside Damon and Holland are Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, and John Leguizamo.

Several cast members were spotted filming earlier this year in Italy and Scotland. Damon’s physical transformation for the role drew early attention during production.

A Classic Story, Reimagined

Homer’s The Odyssey has been adapted countless times. Nolan’s version appears grounded and dramatic, focusing on endurance, loss, and the cost of survival.

The trailer suggests a story driven by character as much as spectacle.

The End of Wait Nears

The Odyssey is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 17. With Nolan at the helm, IMAX technology at its core, and Damon leading the charge, the film is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

For now, the voyage has begun — and the sea looks unforgiving.
