Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada called the explosion an “emergency” that left 19 people with grave injuries, but said no one had yet died from their injuries. Those injured were taken to hospitals across the city.
A massive gas tanker explosion shook Mexico City on Wednesday, leaving three people dead and dozens severely injured. The tragic accident caused widespread panic, destroyed multiple vehicles, and sent thick smoke across the southern part of the capital.
Deadly Highway Blast
The tanker, carrying more than 13,000 gallons of gasoline, tipped over on a major highway. The crash ignited a massive fireball that engulfed nearly 30 vehicles parked or moving beneath the overpass. Flames quickly spread, trapping drivers and passengers.

Casualties and Severe Injuries
Authorities confirmed three deaths and at least 70 injuries. Nineteen victims remain in critical condition, including the truck driver. Among the injured were a baby and a two-year-old child. Officials reported that some victims suffered burns covering up to 100% of their bodies.
Scenes of Horror
Images from the scene showed fire mushrooming into the sky. Survivors staggered out of the inferno, their clothes burned and fused to their skin. Witnesses described people screaming, running for help, and collapsing on the road. Neighbors rushed to rescue the wounded, pulling burn victims to safety before ambulances arrived.
Mayor Declares Emergency
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada called the explosion a grave emergency. She confirmed that prosecutors are investigating the cause. Preliminary findings suggest the tanker exploded after tipping over. “This is a horrible accident,” Brugada said while visiting the site.
Questions Around Gas Company Silza
The overturned truck bore the logo of Silza, a private energy company. However, a Silza representative denied ownership of the vehicle when contacted by The Associated Press. Later, Mexico’s environmental ministry revealed that Silza’s application for updated insurance had been rejected. The company lacked the required permits to transport gasoline at the time of the accident.
Swift Response from Authorities
Firefighters battled the flames using hoses and foam, finally declaring the fire under control by the evening. Emergency medical teams treated victims on-site while others were rushed to nearby hospitals. President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences to the families of the victims on social media and thanked rescue teams for their rapid response.
Highway Reopens After Chaos
The explosion occurred on one of the busiest routes leading out of Mexico City toward Puebla. Traffic was paralyzed for hours as rescue and cleanup operations continued. By late evening, officials confirmed the highway had been reopened to commuters.
A Tragic Reminder
The Mexico City gas tanker explosion highlights the deadly risks of transporting fuel on crowded highways. With questions surrounding regulatory compliance and safety standards, investigators now face pressure to hold responsible parties accountable. For families of the victims, however, the scars—both physical and emotional—will last far longer than the flames.
