Britain’s foreign intelligence service, MI6, has launched a new online tool called Silent Courier. This platform uses the dark web to invite potential spies to share secrets. The effort especially targets Russia.

Using the Dark Web to Reach Spies

Silent Courier operates through the Tor browser, which helps users stay anonymous. People can access a secure MI6 messaging system without revealing their identity. MI6 will provide instructions on how to use the portal on their YouTube channel at 2 a.m. Eastern Time this Friday.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said this move shows how Britain is using “cutting-edge tech” to recruit spies worldwide, with a special focus on Russia.

Safety Precautions Are Vital

MI6 warns users to be careful. They recommend using trusted VPNs and devices not linked to the user to reduce risks, especially in countries with strict controls.

A Call to Russian Citizens

The launch follows a public plea from MI6’s outgoing chief, Sir Richard Moore. In July 2023, during a speech in Prague, he asked Russian citizens to consider spying for the UK. The new service launch will be part of Moore’s farewell speech in Istanbul, where he once served as ambassador. He plans to say, “Our virtual door is open to you.”

How Silent Courier Works

While some technical details remain secret, MI6’s official site encourages would-be spies to use Tor and VPNs when contacting them. The site advises users to create new email accounts with no personal information attached. This step helps keep identities safe.

Classic Spy Imagery Meets Modern Tech

To promote Silent Courier, MI6 released a sleek video. It features scenes that recall classic spy movies — deep forests and desert drives. The video also shows a smartphone screen with the words “transfer information” in Russian, showing a file being uploaded.

New Leadership at MI6

Sir Richard Moore will step down after five years as the head of MI6, known as “C.” Next month, Blaise Metriwelli will take over. She will be the first woman to lead MI6. Metriwelli previously directed innovation and technology within the agency. She also worked in the Middle East and Europe.
