Bafta-winning actor Micheal Ward has been charged with rape and assault. The 27-year-old is known for roles in Top Boy and Blue Story. Police confirmed the charges involve one woman. The alleged incidents happened in January 2023.
Ward lives in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. He now faces two charges of rape and three charges of sexual assault. The Metropolitan Police are leading the investigation.
Police Statement on the Case
Detective Superintendent Scott Ware said his team is supporting the woman involved. He said investigations like this can deeply affect those who come forward. The police are continuing to work closely with her.
Ward is set to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court in East London on August 28.
Ward Responds to the Charges
Soon after the charges became public, Ward released a short statement. He said, “I deny the charges against me entirely.” He added that he has fully cooperated with police and will continue to do so. Ward said he trusts the legal process and hopes it will clear his name. He also said he won’t comment further while the case is ongoing.
Legal Statement From Prosecutors
Catherine Baccas, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London South, shared more details. She said, “After reviewing the evidence, we have decided to charge Micheal Ward with five offences.” These include two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. All charges are related to an incident involving one woman in January 2023.
She reminded the public that Ward has the right to a fair trial. Baccas also urged people not to post or share anything online that could affect the court process.
Micheal Ward’s Acting Career
Ward first gained attention in the TV show Brotherhood. He rose to fame playing Jamie in Top Boy, appearing from 2013 until 2022. The show earned a strong fan base and made him a household name.
Born in Jamaica, Ward moved to the UK at a young age. In 2020, he won the Bafta Rising Star award. A year later, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Lovers Rock, part of the Small Axe series.
He also starred in Empire of Light, released in 2022. His next project is a U.S. western film, Eddington, set during the pandemic era. It is expected to release in the UK next month.
