Mickey 17, the latest sci-fi spectacle from acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho, hits theaters worldwide this weekend. The film, starring Robert Pattinson, is expected to generate around $45 million globally in its opening frame.

High Stakes for Warner Bros.

With a hefty production budget of $118 million (after UK tax credits) and additional marketing expenses, Mickey 17 needs to gross between $240 million and $300 million to break even. Warner Bros. is banking on strong ticket sales to recoup its investment.

Improved Box Office Projections

Initial tracking for Mickey 17 in the U.S. was modest, but projections have improved. The film is now eyeing a $20 million-plus domestic opening, a promising start for an original sci-fi film—traditionally a challenging genre to market beyond a niche audience.

The film’s marketing has focused on making Pattinson’s character, an “expendable” space worker who dies and is regenerated repeatedly, more relatable to general audiences. The movie is drawing comparisons to Arrival (2016), which opened to $24 million. With an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has been well-received so far.

Bong Joon Ho’s Most Expensive Project Yet

Mickey 17 marks the most expensive film in Bong’s career. It surpasses his previous Netflix-backed Okja ($50M) and the Oscar-winning Parasite ($11M), which proved highly profitable. Based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, the project was greenlit in early 2022. Despite its high cost, sources claim the film’s third act is its standout element.

Following Christopher Nolan’s departure from Warner Bros., the studio has been keen to attract top-tier directors. With Bong Joon Ho at the helm, they are hoping Mickey 17 will prove to be a smart investment.

Massive Theatrical Rollout

The film will be shown in 3,770 theaters across the U.S., with early previews beginning Thursday afternoon at 3,200 locations. Premium formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and motion seats, will enhance the viewing experience.

Strong International Start and Global Expansion

Mickey 17 debuted in South Korea last weekend, earning $9 million—Pattinson’s best-ever opening in the country. This weekend, the film will expand to 66 international markets, including major territories like France, Germany, the UK, China, and Latin America. The international opening is projected to be around $25 million, with a total of 28,500 screens worldwide.

Positive Early Reception in Key Markets

Early reactions in France have been favorable, with social and critic scores aligning with films like Alien: Romulus and Tenet. UK critics have also responded well. China remains an unpredictable market, dominated by Ne Zha 2, though state media has reported a positive response from preview screenings.

Aggressive Promotional Campaign

The cast and crew have been actively promoting Mickey 17 across the globe. Events have taken place in Seoul, London, Berlin, and Paris, with stars like Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Naomi Ackie attending.

Can Mickey 17 Deliver a Surprise Hit?

Auteur-driven films often see strong opening weekends, as seen with directors like Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino. However, whether Mickey 17 can sustain momentum remains to be seen. Recent surprises, like Nosferatu becoming Focus Features’ second-highest domestic grosser, prove that unexpected hits can emerge.

As Mickey 17 enters the competitive box office race, all eyes will be on how it performs in the coming weeks.
