Bong Joon Ho’s latest sci-fi film, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has launched with a promising $53.3 million globally. However, its massive budget may stand in the way of financial success.

The R-rated film hit theaters on February 28, first premiering in Korea—Bong’s home country—before expanding internationally. So far, it has earned $34.2 million overseas, including a lackluster $19.1 million debut in North America.

High Expectations, High Costs

Despite crossing the $50 million mark in its opening days, Mickey 17 faces a steep financial challenge. Warner Bros. poured $118 million into production, along with another $80 million for marketing. With a total investment of nearly $200 million, industry insiders estimate the film needs to gross between $275 million and $300 million worldwide to break even.

Had the production cost been closer to $50 million, the film would be in a much stronger position. However, replicating Pattinson’s character repeatedly in this space adventure didn’t come cheap.

Mixed Performance Across Global Markets

Mickey 17 has been released in most major territories, seeing varied results. Korea leads the international box office with $14.6 million after two weekends. France and the United Kingdom followed with $2.9 million and $2.7 million, respectively. However, the film underperformed in China, opening with just $1.3 million.

Premium large formats such as IMAX and Dolby contributed significantly, making up 47% of opening weekend ticket sales.

A Unique Sci-Fi Concept

Based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, the film follows Pattinson as a disposable worker on a human expedition to the frozen world of Niflheim. His character is repeatedly regenerated after each death, leading to complications when a presumed-dead version returns, creating a conflict. The star-studded cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

Audience reactions have been mixed, with the film earning a "B" rating on CinemaScore and a 79% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Broader Trend in Costly Blockbusters

Elsewhere at the box office, Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World added another $9.2 million from 52 territories. While the film has grossed $370.8 million globally, its hefty $180 million production budget and $100 million marketing costs make profitability a challenge—similar to Mickey 17.

While Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson's collaboration has attracted attention, only time will tell if Mickey 17 can generate enough momentum to turn a profit.
