The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled its latest Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin, made entirely from gold mined at the Detour Lake Mine in northern Ontario. This new 2024 edition, a $50 one-ounce 99.99% pure gold coin, continues the mint’s tradition of using Canadian-sourced gold, showcasing not only the country’s mining prowess but also the Mint’s dedication to responsible sourcing and production.
Agnico Eagle, a leading Canadian mining company, exclusively provided the gold for this coin from its Detour Lake Mine. This mine, located in Ontario’s Abitibi Greenstone Belt, is the largest gold-producing mine in Canada, boasting 19.9 million ounces of mineral reserves. Its operation is expected to extend well beyond 2054, making it a significant contributor to Canada's gold industry.

The gold for the coin is refined under strict segregation protocols to ensure its exclusive origin from the Detour Lake Mine, reinforcing the Mint's commitment to transparency and responsible sourcing. This initiative reflects a growing emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices in the industry, something both the Royal Canadian Mint and Agnico Eagle take pride in.

Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “We are proud to once more showcase the purity and responsibility of our Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin by partnering with Agnico Eagle's Detour Lake Mine to issue our newest single mine Gold Maple Leaf coin.” The coin's purity and design reflect the high standards of Canadian mining and refining.

The reverse side of the coin features the iconic Sugar Maple leaf engraving by Walter Ott, surrounded by finely detailed radial lines. Beneath this, a micro-engraved maple leaf security mark includes “24,” visible only under magnification, indicating the coin’s year of issue. Additionally, a privy mark depicting a hand cradling a globe symbolizes the coin's single-source origin. The coin is further safeguarded by the Mint's Bullion DNA technology, ensuring authenticity and security.

Presented in sleek, credit card-style packaging, the bullion coin comes with a certificate of purity and authenticity, signed by the Mint’s chief assayer, adding another layer of credibility and value to this collector's item.

Agnico Eagle’s president and CEO, Ammar Al-Joundi, echoed the sentiment of responsibility and sustainability, stating, “We remain committed to producing gold that meets the highest standards of responsibility and sustainability.” Agnico Eagle, founded in 1957 in northern Ontario, has grown into Canada’s largest gold miner and is globally recognized for its strong environmental and social governance practices. The company continues to maintain solid relationships with local communities and Indigenous groups, further underscoring its responsible mining initiatives.

This coin marks the second single-mine bullion coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint using gold sourced from an Agnico Eagle operation. The first was made from gold mined at Agnico Eagle’s Meliadine mine in 2022.

Collectors and gold investors will have the opportunity to purchase this new coin at select Costco locations and online, giving them a chance to own a piece of Canadian gold history. The mint expects this coin to be in high demand, given its purity, security features, and responsible sourcing.
