Employees at a Walmart warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario, are set to start voting on Tuesday to decide if they want to join Unifor, a major Canadian union.

Lana Payne, Unifor’s National President, stated that this vote is an opportunity for workers to gain fair treatment in their workplace. She described the union as a means to level the playing field with a large corporation like Walmart.

Unifor submitted an application to the Ontario Labour Relations Board on September 3, seeking to represent the warehouse workers. The vote was triggered after at least 40 percent of the workforce showed interest in unionizing by signing union cards.

Unifor’s efforts to organize workers at this Walmart site started in December 2023. The union currently represents 315,000 workers across Canada.

Payne emphasized that Walmart employees deserve better job security, improved health and safety measures, and fair pay.
