Leagues Cup 2025 : The tournament will have a new format in order to provide a better spectacle.

The Leagues Cup 2025 is back — recharged with a leaner structure, better planning, and thrilling cross-league showdowns. Organizers have unveiled a brand-new format aiming to intensify the rivalry between Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX, giving fans more action-packed matches and a more balanced schedule.

36 Teams to Compete: MLS and Liga MX Go Head-to-Head

The upcoming edition will feature 36 teams in total — 18 from MLS and 18 from Liga MX.

Unlike the last two years when 47 clubs participated, 2025 will see a scaled-down lineup. For Liga MX, all 18 teams are in. However, only MLS clubs that qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs will secure a spot.

This change is meant to raise the level of play and ensure that only the best-performing MLS teams take part. It also reduces the season disruption for both leagues, which had to pause for over a month in previous editions.

Revised Format: More Cross-League Matches, Less Intra-League Eliminations

The biggest highlight of the Leagues Cup 2025 format is its focus on promoting MLS vs Liga MX clashes throughout the tournament.

Each team will now play three group-stage matches exclusively against clubs from the opposing league. This eliminates early eliminations between teams from the same country.

Points will be awarded as follows:

  • 3 points for a regular-time win
  • 2 points for a penalty shootout win
  • 1 point for a penalty shootout loss

Teams will be divided into two conferences — East and West. At the end of the group stage, the top four from each conference will move on to the knockout rounds.

Knockout Round Changes: Weekday Matches and Smooth Scheduling

The knockout phase introduces another smart twist. Starting from the quarterfinals, matches will be scheduled during the week.

This change helps prevent a complete shutdown of both domestic leagues, something that previously frustrated teams and fans alike.

Tournament Dates: Mark Your Calendars

The Leagues Cup 2025 will run from July 29 to August 31, fitting snugly within the summer break window.

This timeframe allows both leagues to resume their regular seasons without a major delay, all while keeping fans glued to the action throughout the summer.

Why This New Format Works Better

The revamped Leagues Cup structure is not just about reducing the number of teams. It’s designed to:

  • Maximize high-stakes international matchups
  • Maintain league momentum with limited disruption
  • Deliver top-tier entertainment for fans across North America

By reducing the clutter and refining matchups, organizers aim to create a more intense and prestigious competition.

Where to Watch Leagues Cup 2025 Live

All matches will stream exclusively on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass, ensuring fans don’t miss any of the cross-border drama.

Final Word

With new rules, a redefined qualification process, and fewer but stronger teams, the Leagues Cup 2025 promises an upgraded viewing experience.

This isn't just a tournament — it's the next chapter in the growing MLS vs Liga MX rivalry, and it's set to deliver non-stop soccer thrills this summer.
