In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, two Montreal teenagers, Emma Bassermann and Zoe Meklensek-Ireland, rescued a distressed couple from the waters off the Barbados coast on Wednesday. The couple, Belinda and Robert Stone from South London found themselves in a perilous situation when Robert struggled to return to shore.

Bassermann, a 14-year-old competitive swimmer with the Dorval Swim Club, and Meklensek-Ireland, a 13-year-old accompanying her father, Chuck Meklensek, the club's national development coach, were at the Barbados Beach Club in Christ Church at the right place and the right time.

Responding to Belinda Stone's cries for help, the girls swiftly brought her ashore. However, realizing they didn't have time to fetch additional assistance, they embarked on a daring mission to rescue Robert. Tying the strap of a boogie board to Meklensek-Ireland's ankle, they battled against the ocean current, ultimately bringing Robert back to safety.

"He was having a hard time breathing, so the first words we heard out of his mouth were when he touched the sand," recounted Bassermann. Both girls, being adept swimmers, credited their instincts and knowledge of swimming parallel to the shore in strong currents for the successful rescue.

The heroic act unfolded at a critical moment for the couple, who expressed gratitude for the girls' timely intervention. Belinda Stone revealed that thoughts of her will crossed her mind during the ordeal, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The teenagers' heroism has garnered widespread acclaim, with local authorities recognizing their bravery. A local politician presented them with a token of appreciation, underscoring the impact of their actions. The Stones, emotionally moved by the incident, firmly believe that the girls saved their lives.

In an interview with Barbados Today and a YouTube video, the girls recounted the dramatic rescue, with viewers flooding the comments section with messages of gratitude and admiration. The couple, still in awe of the teens' courage, expressed their deep appreciation, with Robert suggesting the presence of a "good guardian angel" watching over them, perhaps a "Canadian one," as he added.

Despite the intense test of her swimming skills, Bassermann remains focused on her goal of participating in the Olympics in 2028 and beyond. The incident not only showcased the girls' exceptional bravery but also served as a testament to the importance of individuals with life-saving skills being in the right place at the right time.
