After several days of milder temperatures and calmer skies, winter is making a sharp return across southern Ontario. Forecasters say a cold system will move into the region on Wednesday, bringing snow, freezing rain and strong winds to many communities.
Weather warnings and advisories now cover a wide stretch of the province, from Windsor through Hamilton and Barrie and eastward to Belleville. Alerts include concerns about dense fog, icy conditions and accumulating snowfall.
A Sudden Change in the Forecast
“The recent calm weather pattern will come to an abrupt end on Wednesday as a frontal system arrives from California,” Global News’ chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell explained.
He added, “Significant amounts of snow, freezing rain and even rain are likely across parts of southern Ontario, with the GTA in line potentially for all three.”
The system will push colder air into the region, setting the stage for messy conditions through much of Wednesday.
Ice and Strong Winds in Some Areas
In the Kitchener region, officials issued an orange weather alert warning of substantial freezing rain. Forecasts suggest ice buildup between five and 10 millimetres. Wind gusts could reach 60 kilometres per hour, which may increase the risk of slippery roads and possible power outages.
Toronto faces a slightly less severe forecast but still expects challenging conditions. A special weather statement warns of hazardous winter weather, including up to five centimetres of snow, reduced visibility and the possibility of ice pellets.
Snow Totals Could Vary
The type of precipitation that falls will depend heavily on temperature at ground level and higher in the atmosphere.
“The temperature at the surface and also a little higher in the atmosphere will play a crucial role in the precipitation type — and right now I would expect areas that stay mostly snow — (and could) end up with 15 to 20 cm by the end of Wednesday,” Farnell added.
Communities under winter storm watches may record the heaviest snowfall totals. Areas already covered in snow could see further accumulation, adding to travel difficulties.
From Snow to Ice
Forecasters expect the storm to shift as it moves across the region. Snowfall may gradually turn into freezing rain or ice pellets, especially west of Toronto toward Hamilton, Kitchener and Guelph.
The combination of snow, ice and wind could make roads slick and visibility poor during the Wednesday commute. Drivers and pedestrians should use caution and allow extra travel time.
Prepare for Changing Conditions
Residents across southern Ontario should stay informed as the system develops. Weather conditions may change quickly, especially where temperatures hover near the freezing mark.
After a brief break from harsh winter weather, the province now prepares for another round of cold and challenging conditions. Officials urge people to check forecasts regularly and adjust plans if necessary.
