The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2025 turned into a night of powerful performances, heartfelt speeches, and emotional tributes. Though the ceremony felt subdued at moments, the stars still delivered unforgettable highlights.
Ariana Grande’s Emotional Victory
Ariana Grande walked away with two of the night’s biggest honors — *Video of the Year* and *Best Pop Video*. Her acceptance speech quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening.
Grande thanked her “therapists and gay people,” a candid line that drew laughter and cheers from the audience. Later, she returned to the stage to present Mariah Carey with the coveted Video Vanguard Award, calling her “the soundtrack of our lives” and “the only true vocal queen.”

Lady Gaga Defines the Night
Lady Gaga, the evening’s top nominee, set the tone early by winning Artist of the Year. Her acceptance speech turned reflective as she spoke about the purpose of artistry.
“Being an artist is an attempt to connect souls across the world,” Gaga said, before dedicating her award to fans and fiancé Michael Polansky, who co-produced her latest album Mayhem.
She later stunned with a live performance of “Abracadabra” and “The Dead Dance,” leaving the crowd at Madison Square Garden and UBS Arena electrified.
Mariah Carey’s Golden Moment
Mariah Carey finally received her first VMA, taking home the Video Vanguard Award. In classic Carey fashion, she joked, “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?” before launching into a dazzling medley.
Dressed in a satin robe that transformed into a glittering bodysuit, Carey performed hits like “Fantasy,” “Obsessed,” and “We Belong Together.” The tribute also honored her groundbreaking album The Emancipation of Mimi, now celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Rock Honors for Ozzy Osbourne
The late Ozzy Osbourne received an emotional tribute from some of rock’s biggest names. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, YUNGBLUD, and Nuno Bettencourt delivered a roaring medley of Osbourne classics, including “Crazy Train” and “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”
His son Jack, alongside Osbourne’s grandchildren, shared a heartfelt video message. “It would make him incredibly happy to see his legacy carried forward,” Jack said. The tribute ended with the performers shouting, “Ozzy forever, man!”
Busta Rhymes and Ricky Martin Make History
Hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes was honored with the first-ever *MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award*. He performed a string of classics, including “Scenario” and “Pass the Courvoisier, Part II,” alongside Joyner Lucas, Papoose, and GloRilla.
In his acceptance speech, Busta remembered the late Ananda Lewis, a beloved MTV host from the 1990s. “She loved the culture very much. I miss her dearly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ricky Martin received the inaugural *Latin Icon Award*. His high-energy set marked 25 years since his historic 1999 VMA debut. Martin dedicated the award to his four children and emphasized unity through music.
Doja Cat Sparks the Show
The ceremony opened with Doja Cat in true MTV style. Interrupting host LL Cool J with a quirky video, she launched into a performance of “Jealous Type,” complete with a Kenny G sax solo.
Doja, known for unpredictable moments, had earlier amused fans by chewing on lipstick during her red carpet appearance.
Swift and Beyoncé Remain Tied
Much anticipation surrounded Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, both nominated for *Artist of the Year*. A win would have broken their tie for most VMA victories. But with Gaga’s triumph, the two megastars remain even at 30 awards each.
Other Notable Performances
The night also featured Sabrina Carpenter, Conan Gray, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Tate McRae, J Balvin, Alex Warren, and sombr. Carpenter, in particular, earned praise for her charismatic stage presence and energetic delivery.
