An Australian judge sentenced Erin Patterson, 50, to life in prison for killing three people with a meal laced with deadly mushrooms. She will be eligible for parole in 33 years, at age 83.

Supreme Court Justice Christopher Beale delivered the ruling on Monday. He told Patterson she had caused deep suffering and showed no remorse. “Your failure to exhibit any remorse pours salt into all the victims’ wounds,” he said.

Her lawyers have 28 days to appeal. They argued her case’s global notoriety will leave her isolated in prison, and sought parole eligibility after 30 years.

Poisoned lunch shocked the world
Patterson hosted a lunch at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, in 2023. She served beef Wellington containing death cap mushrooms, the most lethal variety in the world.

The meal killed her estranged husband’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and his aunt, Heather Wilkinson. Heather’s husband, Pastor Ian Wilkinson, survived after becoming critically ill.

Patterson’s estranged husband Simon had also been invited but cancelled at the last minute. Their relationship had grown tense, with disputes over child support payments.

Trial captivated global attention
The trial began in July and lasted more than two months. It drew crowds of podcasters, filmmakers, and true crime followers to the rural town of Morwell. Coverage stretched worldwide, with audiences from New York to New Delhi following the “mushroom murders.”

A 12-member jury convicted Patterson of three murders and one attempted murder. Prosecutors said she knowingly served the poisoned dish. Patterson claimed the deaths were a tragic accident and insisted she had not realized the mushrooms were deadly.

Impact on families
Relatives of the victims gave heartbreaking testimony before sentencing. Pastor Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor, said he struggles to cope with life without his wife.

“The silence in our home is a daily reminder,” he said. “I continue to carry a heavy burden of grief over her untimely death.”

Friends of the family described their grief as overwhelming, with some calling the tragedy beyond comprehension.

Deadly fungus at the centre
Death cap mushrooms, native to Europe but found in Australia, contain toxins that destroy the liver and kidneys. Even a small amount can be fatal. They resemble edible mushrooms, making them especially dangerous. Their mild, pleasant taste hides their lethal effect, which often appears hours after consumption.

The case has brought renewed warnings about wild mushroom foraging. Health experts stress that death caps cannot be made safe by cooking, freezing, or drying.

Looking ahead
While Patterson begins her life sentence, the motive remains unclear. Justice Beale noted that uncertainty but said the crime’s impact could not be undone.

Patterson will remain in prison for decades before any chance of release.
