Nathan Beaulieu, a former first-round NHL Draft pick, has officially hung up his skates. The 32-year-old defenseman announced his retirement on Wednesday, bringing an end to a professional hockey career that spanned over a decade.

A Promising Start in Montreal

Beaulieu entered the NHL spotlight when the Montreal Canadiens selected him 17th overall in the 2011 Draft. His potential was clear from the beginning, thanks to his sharp skating, puck-moving skills, and on-ice awareness.

He made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in the 2012-13 season and spent parts of five seasons with the franchise. During his time in Montreal, he became known for his composure under pressure and ability to move the puck out of the defensive zone.

Journey Across Four NHL Teams

After his stint with the Canadiens, Beaulieu was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, where he spent two seasons. He later joined the Winnipeg Jets and then moved to the Anaheim Ducks, his final NHL team.

Over 471 regular-season NHL games, Beaulieu collected 12 goals and 86 assists, totaling 98 points. He also made 21 Stanley Cup Playoff appearances, recording five assists during high-stakes post-season play.

Final NHL Chapter with Anaheim

Beaulieu last appeared in the NHL during the 2022-23 season with the Anaheim Ducks. He played 52 games, providing a veteran presence on the blue line and adding four assists that season. Though no longer in his prime, his defensive reliability continued to be valuable.

Overseas Adventures Before Retirement

Following his NHL tenure, Beaulieu sought new challenges abroad. He joined EHC Kloten in the Swiss National League for the 2023-24 season, where he added two assists in 13 games. Shortly afterward, he signed with Barys Astana in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). In Russia, he played eight games and contributed one assist before deciding to step away from professional hockey.

A Solid Career Built on Persistence

Beaulieu’s career may not have been filled with headline-grabbing moments, but it was marked by grit, consistency, and adaptability. From a first-round pick in Montreal to a seasoned presence across multiple teams, he earned respect as a steady, dependable defenseman.

His journey also highlights the unpredictable nature of professional sports. While he didn’t become a superstar, his 11-season run in the NHL is a testament to perseverance and hard work.

What’s Next for Nathan Beaulieu?

As Beaulieu transitions into retirement, fans and teammates alike are reflecting on his contributions. While he hasn’t revealed his post-retirement plans, the hockey world will be watching to see if he stays connected to the game—perhaps in coaching, development, or media.

Whatever the future holds, Beaulieu leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and quiet leadership. He may no longer be on the ice, but his impact will not be forgotten.
