In a strategic shift, the United States is selling weapons to NATO allies in Europe so they can transfer them to Ukraine, amid renewed Russian drone and missile attacks. President Donald Trump confirmed this plan during a recent interview with NBC News.

“We’re sending weapons to NATO, and NATO is paying for those weapons, 100%,” Trump said. “Then NATO is passing them on to Ukraine.”

Faster Aid Delivery Through Europe

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the speed advantage. Many U.S.-made weapons are already stationed with NATO allies across Europe. Transferring them from, say, Germany to Ukraine is much quicker than shipping directly from the U.S., he said.

Rubio, speaking from Malaysia, explained that European allies can then replenish their stocks by purchasing new weapons from the U.S. This system not only accelerates the delivery of weapons but also supports Ukraine’s urgent defense needs.

Ukraine Seeks More Patriot Systems

At the heart of Ukraine’s request are Patriot air defense systems — vital for countering Russia’s ballistic and cruise missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has requested ten additional Patriot systems. Germany has agreed to provide two, and Norway one.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed Berlin is ready to buy more Patriot systems from the U.S. for Ukraine. He also said he personally requested the delivery in a recent conversation with Trump.

NATO’s Role and U.S. Strategy

While NATO as an organization doesn’t directly send weapons, its 32 member countries do. The alliance coordinates efforts and logistics for vital non-lethal aid like fuel and medical supplies. Still, most military aid comes from individual member states.

NATO spokesperson Allison Hart noted that allies are working hard to ensure Ukraine receives necessary defensive equipment, particularly from the United States.

The U.S. is not only promoting the transfer of Patriot systems but also encouraging the sale of other critical defense assets like medium- and short-range missiles and Howitzer rounds.

Strategic Bypass to Congressional Gridlock

This weapons-for-resupply plan serves another purpose — it sidesteps a possible funding deadlock in the U.S. Congress. Although the U.S. has so far maintained strong bipartisan support for Ukraine, there are concerns over whether future aid packages will pass.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, currently in Rome, said this strategy supports American security interests while placing the financial burden on Europe. “We have the best weapons. They know how to use them,” Graham said.

Trump’s Changing Tone on Russia

President Trump’s approach to Ukraine support has been inconsistent. After a pause in aid, he resumed sending defensive systems. Recently, Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the war “a conflict that’s killing a lot of people.”

He hinted at a significant announcement about Russia coming next week. Additionally, Trump has allowed Senator Graham to advance a bill proposing a 500% tariff on imports from countries that still buy Russian oil.

Trump’s relationship with President Zelenskyy has also warmed. After a heated dispute earlier this year, both leaders recently held a constructive phone call about Ukraine’s air defense needs.

Russia’s Attacks Intensify

Russia continues to launch intense airstrikes. This week, it fired over 700 drones at Ukraine in a massive overnight assault — the third major aerial attack in two weeks. Ukraine’s frontline stretches over 1,000 kilometers, where heavy fighting persists.

On Friday, Kharkiv was hit by a Russian drone attack that injured nine and damaged a maternity hospital. In Odesa, another drone strike also injured nine civilians.

The U.N. reported that June saw the highest civilian casualties in three years — 232 killed and 1,343 wounded.

New Project: Clear Sky

To counter drone threats, Ukraine has launched a new air defense initiative called “Clear Sky.” It includes a $6.2 million investment in drone interceptors, operator training, and mobile response units.

“We found a solution,” Zelenskyy said. “Now we need the funding. Then we will intercept.”

As Ukraine faces its most intense wave of attacks in recent months, the joint efforts of NATO, the U.S., and European allies are proving essential in keeping the country’s defence systems alive and evolving.
