Nazem Kadri returns to the Colorado Avalanche after a major NHL trade with the Calgary Flames, bringing experience and depth to a Stanley Cup contender.

The Nazem Kadri trade has reshaped two NHL rosters, as the Calgary Flames confirmed Friday that the veteran centre is heading back to the Colorado Avalanche. The move reunites Kadri with the franchise where he previously celebrated one of the biggest moments of his career.

Calgary finalized the deal in exchange for a mix of draft capital and roster additions, signaling a strategic shift as the Flames continue to reshape their lineup. For Colorado, the acquisition brings back an experienced forward who already understands the team’s system and championship ambitions.

Flames Receive Picks and Forwards in Return

In the Nazem Kadri trade package, the Flames received a conditional first-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft and a conditional second-round pick in 2027. Calgary also acquired forward Victor Olofsson along with the rights to forward Max Curran.

To complete the deal, the Flames included a 2027 fourth-round draft pick as part of the transaction. Calgary will also retain 20 percent of Kadri’s salary, a move designed to make the trade financially workable for both teams.

The exchange reflects Calgary’s effort to add flexibility and future assets while bringing in players who can contribute to the roster in the near term.

A Familiar Return to Colorado

For Kadri, the move marks a return to the Avalanche organization, where he previously spent three seasons after being traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019.

During his earlier stint in Colorado, Kadri played a key role in the team’s championship run. He was part of the Avalanche squad that captured the Stanley Cup in 2022, cementing his place in the franchise’s recent history.

Now, the experienced centre returns to a roster still widely considered a contender, giving Colorado another proven option down the middle as it pursues another title.

Kadri’s Production and Career Achievements

At 35 years old, Kadri continues to provide offensive production and veteran leadership. This season with the Flames, he recorded 12 goals and 29 assists across 61 games.

Over the course of his NHL career, Kadri has appeared in 1,046 games, collecting 319 goals and 751 points. His longevity and consistent play have made him one of the more reliable two-way centres in the league.

Kadri also earned NHL All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023, further highlighting his impact during the latter stages of his career.

Contract Situation and Career Journey

Kadri remains under contract through the 2028-29 season with a salary cap hit of $7 million annually. Calgary’s decision to retain part of his salary was a key component in facilitating the trade.

The Ontario native began his NHL journey when the Toronto Maple Leafs selected him seventh overall in the 2009 NHL Draft. After a decade in Toronto, he was traded to Colorado in 2019, where he quickly became an important part of the team’s lineup.

Following the Avalanche’s Stanley Cup victory, Kadri entered free agency and signed with the Calgary Flames in 2022, beginning a new chapter in his career.

Avalanche Strengthen Their Cup Aspirations

With the Nazem Kadri trade now official, Colorado adds a familiar and experienced presence to its forward group. His previous success with the team could help ease the transition and provide valuable depth during the playoff push.

Meanwhile, the Flames gain draft assets and roster flexibility as they continue shaping their long-term plans.

As the NHL season progresses, the impact of this move will unfold on the ice. For Kadri, however, the storyline is already compelling — a return to a championship contender where he once helped lift the Stanley Cup.
