People attend France's annual street music festival, the Fête de la Musique, on the Seine river banks in Paris on June 21, 2025.
A nationwide celebration turned grim in France as 145 people were reportedly pricked with syringes during the annual Fête de la Musique. The festival, known for filling French streets with music and joy, was marred by disturbing incidents of “needle spiking.”
French police responded swiftly, detaining 12 individuals suspected of involvement in these attacks. The interior ministry confirmed the alarming figure and emphasized that investigations are ongoing.
Paris Sees a Spike in Cases Amid Massive Crowds
Paris was hit particularly hard. Officials confirmed at least 13 reported syringe attacks in the capital alone. Paris Police Chief Laurent Nuñez described the crowd in the city as “three to four times larger than usual.”
The unusual surge in attendance made it harder to manage safety, he said in an interview. This chaotic environment likely created the perfect cover for the assailants.
Concerns Over Drugging via Syringes
Authorities are investigating whether the victims were injected with date-rape drugs like Rohypnol or GHB. These substances can cause disorientation, unconsciousness, and leave individuals vulnerable to assault.
“Toxicology tests are currently being conducted,” said a spokesperson from the French interior ministry. “We are treating this with the utmost seriousness.”
Needle spiking—a rising global concern—is often difficult to detect in real time. Victims typically feel a sting, then become unwell shortly afterward, with symptoms ranging from dizziness to nausea.
Social Media Warnings Ignored?
Before the event, several feminist influencers had raised alarms. Activists like Abrège Soeur warned that online platforms were being used to encourage syringe attacks on women during the festival.
Their warnings now seem chillingly prophetic. “These are extremely serious incidents,” Police Chief Nuñez said, adding that the social media calls to attack women with syringes were “completely idiotic.”
Young Victims Spark Further Alarm
In one of the most disturbing developments, three individuals in Paris—among them a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man—reported being pricked in different parts of the city.
All three later reported feeling unwell, according to French broadcaster BFMTV. These attacks have raised fears that minors and young adults are particularly vulnerable to such crimes in crowded public events.
Mass Arrests Across the Country
Beyond the needle attacks, the interior ministry confirmed a total of 371 arrests made across France on Saturday night alone. Nearly 90 of these arrests occurred in Paris.
While some of these arrests were linked to unrelated disturbances, police are also investigating whether any detainees are connected to the syringe assaults.
Festival Safety Now Under Scrutiny
The Fête de la Musique is one of France’s most cherished public festivals, known for drawing massive crowds into open public spaces. But this year’s event has forced a national conversation about public safety.
As investigations continue, questions are being raised about how well-prepared law enforcement agencies are for dealing with modern threats like needle spiking.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Authorities are urging festival goers and the general public to remain cautious. Anyone who believes they were pricked or feels unwell after being in a crowd should seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to the police.
In light of these events, safety measures at public festivals are likely to be reviewed and intensified in future editions.
