US President Donald Trump turned down a plan from Israel to kill Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Three US officials told CBS News that Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu it was “not a good idea.” Trump has not said anything publicly about this.
Tense Talks After Israeli Attack
The talks happened after Israel launched attacks on Iran last Friday. Israel targeted Iranian nuclear sites and other places. Since then, both countries have exchanged heavy strikes. The conflict had lasted three days by Sunday.
Netanyahu’s Response
In an interview, Netanyahu did not clearly confirm or deny the reports. He said, “There’s so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I’m not going to get into that.” But he added Israel will “do what we need to do” and believes the US understands what is best for itself.
Israel’s Focus on Military Targets
An Israeli official told CBS News that Israel usually does not kill political leaders. The country focuses on nuclear and military targets. The official said, “I don’t think anyone making decisions about those programs should be living free and easy.”
Trump Calls for Peace
Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “Iran and Israel should make a deal.” He said he would help them stop fighting, just like he helped ease tensions between India and Pakistan recently.
US Stands With Israel
Before leaving for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump said the US would keep supporting Israel. He did not say whether he asked Israel to stop attacking Iran.
Nuclear Talks Cancelled
The next US-Iran nuclear talks were supposed to happen Sunday. But Oman’s foreign minister, who helps mediate, said the talks were canceled. Iran told Qatar and Oman it would not negotiate a ceasefire while Israel attacks continue.
Trump Warns Iran
Trump said the US had no part in Israel’s attack. But he warned Iran, “If we are attacked in any way, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”
