Islamabad insists Trump’s actions were instrumental in restoring calm. However, India has flatly denied any foreign mediation.

In a surprising diplomatic gesture, Pakistan has officially nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The South Asian nation praised Trump for what it called his "stellar statesmanship" and "decisive diplomatic intervention" during the May 2025 crisis between India and Pakistan.

Trump’s Role in Halting Cross-Border Violence

The nomination comes after intense cross-border strikes between the nuclear-armed neighbours earlier this year. The skirmishes, the worst since 1971, resulted in dozens of casualties and raised fears of a full-scale war.

On May 8, the violence ended abruptly following what Pakistan describes as a U.S.-brokered truce. According to Islamabad, Trump’s leadership was instrumental in achieving this breakthrough. His intervention, they said, helped "avert a broader conflict" with potentially catastrophic consequences for millions.

Pakistan’s Statement Lauds “Strategic Foresight”

In an official statement released Saturday, the Pakistani government credited Trump with de-escalating regional tensions through backdoor diplomacy.

“At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight,” the statement read. It continued to say his diplomatic engagement was “robust and timely,” earning him the reputation of a “genuine peacemaker.”

This move, Pakistan emphasized, was not just a temporary resolution but a demonstration of conflict resolution through dialogue—one of the key principles of the Nobel Peace Prize.

India Disagrees with Pakistan’s Version

However, India offered a starkly different narrative. While Pakistan highlighted Washington’s role, New Delhi maintained that the ceasefire was a result of “direct bilateral communication.” Indian officials downplayed the U.S. involvement, aiming to frame the outcome as a sovereign diplomatic success.

This difference in narrative has sparked debates in diplomatic circles about the actual depth of Trump’s involvement in the peace process.

Trump’s Global Peace Efforts in the Spotlight

Trump, who has long touted himself as a global peacemaker, has previously criticized President Joe Biden’s failure to resolve major international conflicts. His administration’s handling of the Ukraine invasion and the Gaza crisis has often been used as contrasting examples.

Trump has not shied away from sharing his frustrations about the lack of international recognition. Posting on his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between India and Pakistan… nor for Russia/Ukraine or Israel/Iran, no matter what those outcomes may be.”

Despite this, his supporters argue that the recent nomination is a validation of his diplomatic prowess on the global stage.

Escalating Crisis in the Middle East

Trump’s peace nomination comes at a time when the Middle East is again on the brink of disaster. On June 13, Israel launched a series of strikes on Iran, claiming to target nuclear facilities and senior military officials. The response from Tehran was swift, with drone and missile strikes hitting northern and southern Israel.

The human toll is already staggering. Iranian state media reported over 400 deaths, while Israel confirmed at least 24 casualties. Talks of a larger war loom as both nations dig in for a prolonged confrontation.

Trump’s Next Move on Iran Unclear

Amid this growing crisis, Trump is reportedly considering the U.S.'s military options in the region. He has set a self-imposed deadline of two weeks to decide on any potential American involvement.

European leaders, meanwhile, are pushing for de-escalation. Iran, however, refuses to engage in further talks while under Israeli assault.

A Bid for Recognition or Real Diplomacy?

Pakistan’s nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize has reignited discussions about his legacy as a dealmaker. Whether or not he wins the prestigious award, the move has certainly placed his efforts in the international spotlight.

As tensions continue to rise globally, many are watching closely to see whether Trump’s approach to diplomacy can bring more peace—or simply more headlines.
