The United States and Canada recently detected two Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska, according to a statement from the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

The aircraft appeared in the region on Wednesday and prompted a response from the joint defence organization, which monitors air activity across North America.

NORAD Launches Fighter Jets

After detecting the aircraft, NORAD quickly launched several fighter jets to monitor the situation. The response included 12 military aircraft, among them advanced F-35 and F-22 fighter jets.

Officials said the aircraft flew into the region to identify, monitor and intercept the Russian planes while keeping track of their movement in the area.

The Russian aircraft involved in the incident were identified as TU-142 military planes, which usually perform long-range maritime patrol missions over oceans.

These aircraft often operate near international waters as part of routine military patrols.

Aircraft Remained in International Airspace

NORAD clarified that the Russian planes did not enter the airspace of either Canada or the United States.

“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace,” NORAD said in a statement.

Military aircraft from both countries continued to observe the planes until they left the monitored region.

Activity Occurs From Time to Time

NORAD noted that similar incidents occur periodically in northern airspace.

“This Russian activity in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”

Military officials explained that aircraft from different countries sometimes fly close to the defence identification zone during routine operations.

When such flights appear, NORAD tracks them carefully to ensure they do not enter the protected airspace of Canada or the United States.

Understanding the Air Defence Identification Zone

The aircraft entered the Air Defence Identification Zone, commonly known as the ADIZ. This zone covers a large area of international airspace surrounding North America.

The purpose of the zone involves early detection and monitoring of aircraft approaching the continent.

Aircraft flying through this region must identify themselves to defence authorities so that officials can determine whether the flight poses any risk.

Even though the ADIZ lies outside national borders, defence forces monitor it closely as part of North America’s security system.

Ongoing Monitoring of Northern Airspace

NORAD continues to watch the skies over the northern region as part of its regular operations.

The organization works as a joint command between Canada and the United States and responds to unusual or unidentified air activity near the continent.

Officials say such monitoring helps ensure that North American airspace remains secure while allowing international aircraft to operate in permitted areas.
