Actress Olivia Munn bravely disclosed her private battle with breast cancer, revealing her decision to undergo a double mastectomy to confront the aggressive form of cancer she was diagnosed with in 2023.

In a heartfelt series of social media posts, the 43-year-old actress candidly shared her journey, recounting her experience of receiving the diagnosis despite testing negative for commonly known breast cancer genes, including BRCA. Munn recounted how a routine mammogram showed no abnormalities, only for her to be blindsided by the diagnosis of a rapid-moving cancer, classified as Luminol B.

Her openness about her struggle has sparked curiosity among many about breast cancer and its various types, as well as the advancements in cancer research and treatment methods.

Medical experts classify breast cancers into four main groups based on genetic testing of cancer cells. These groups are determined by the presence or absence of hormone receptors and the HER2 gene.

The first two groups, Luminal A and Luminal B, are characterized by hormone receptor positivity but differ in their response to treatment, with Luminal B requiring more aggressive therapies.

The third group, HER2-Positive, shows overexpression of the HER2 gene and requires targeted treatments alongside chemotherapy.

The fourth group, basal-like or triple-negative breast cancer, lacks hormone receptors and HER2 expression, making chemotherapy the primary treatment option.

Understanding the genetic and chemical composition of the cancer aids doctors in tailoring effective treatment plans for individual patients, as emphasized by the Mayo Clinic.

Munn shared her personal ordeal, including undergoing four surgeries over ten months, highlighting her resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges, she remained determined, limiting her emotional expression to maintain clarity of mind.

She expressed gratitude for the support of her husband, comedian John Mulaney, who played a crucial role in caring for their young son during her treatment.

Munn's poignant message concluded with a touching image of her hospital bedside table, adorned with a photo of Mulaney and their smiling son, symbolizing hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
