OpenAI is expected to introduce Orion, the follow-up to GPT-4, by year’s end. The Hindu

OpenAI is gearing up to release its highly anticipated AI model, Orion, sometime in December. However, unlike previous versions like GPT-4, Orion won’t be available to general ChatGPT users. Instead, it will be accessible to select companies that OpenAI closely collaborates with. This marks a shift in OpenAI’s approach, focusing on exclusive partnerships for the rollout of their newest technology.
According to a report, Microsoft engineers are already preparing to integrate Orion into the tech giant’s Azure platform, with the launch expected by the end of next month. Although some sources refer to Orion as the successor to GPT-4, it is unclear whether OpenAI will officially name it GPT-5.

An OpenAI executive hinted on social media that Orion might be significantly more powerful than GPT-4, with a computing volume 100 times greater. Despite this, it seems the model uses similar resources and is based on a smaller "Strawberry" version for training purposes. This model is expected to bring improved problem-solving and reasoning abilities, making it a significant advancement over previous AI technologies.

Adding to the intrigue, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted a cryptic tweet last month, stating, “Excited for the winter constellations to rise soon; they are so great.” When users asked ChatGPT to interpret the tweet, it pointed to Orion, suggesting that the upcoming AI model is likely tied to this reference. This aligns with the anticipation surrounding the December launch of Orion.

The timing of Orion’s release follows OpenAI’s recent $6.6 billion funding round, which required the company to restructure as a for-profit entity. As OpenAI shifts its business focus, it has also made internal changes, such as dissolving its ‘AGI Readiness’ team. This team was initially tasked with advising the company on managing AI models that could rival or surpass human intelligence.

These organizational changes, along with the exclusive release of Orion, suggest that OpenAI is carefully positioning itself for the future of AI development. Orion is expected to offer major advancements in computational power, potentially shaping the next generation of artificial intelligence.
