OpenAI has joined forces with Walmart to let users purchase products directly through ChatGPT. The move expands the AI company’s efforts to turn its chatbot into a virtual shopping assistant. It also represents a significant push into e-commerce as OpenAI seeks new revenue streams.
According to Walmart, the new feature will allow customers to “simply chat and buy.” Shoppers can browse products in conversation with ChatGPT and complete purchases through instant checkout. This includes everyday items such as meal ingredients, household goods, and more.
“For years, online shopping revolved around search bars and long item lists,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said. “That is about to change.”
Simplifying Everyday Shopping
OpenAI cofounder and CEO Sam Altman emphasized the convenience this partnership offers. “This collaboration will make everyday purchases a little simpler,” he said.
Details on the exact launch date remain limited. Walmart only confirmed that the feature will be available “soon.” Still, the announcement signals OpenAI’s latest push into online commerce. Previously, the company introduced similar integrations for Shopify and Etsy sellers.
By partnering with Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, OpenAI takes a major step forward in the online shopping space. The move also positions the company to compete with Amazon and Google for digital purchase transactions, potentially creating a new revenue source. OpenAI has yet to turn a profit, relying heavily on investor funding to support its AI development and operations.
Technical Foundations for Instant Checkout
When unveiling its Shopify and Etsy integrations last month, OpenAI highlighted the role of payments company Stripe. Stripe helped establish the technical standards to enable purchases through OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” system, allowing transactions to be fast and secure.
The Walmart integration will likely leverage similar technology. Users can expect a seamless checkout experience, removing the traditional need to leave the chat interface to complete purchases.
Walmart’s Broader AI Strategy
Walmart has increasingly invested in artificial intelligence across its operations and customer offerings. The company has introduced an AI shopping assistant named Sparky, along with other AI-driven improvements for both Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.
Members of Sam’s Club will also benefit from the upcoming ChatGPT shopping feature. In addition, Walmart promotes AI literacy among its employees, preparing staff to work alongside advanced technologies.
“AI is transforming everything we do, from smarter catalogs to faster delivery, and it only works if people trust it,” said Daniel Danker, Walmart’s executive vice president of AI Acceleration, Product, and Design.
Market Reaction
Investors responded positively to the news. Walmart’s shares rose nearly 5% by the close of trading on Tuesday, reflecting optimism about the potential of AI-powered shopping.
For OpenAI, integrating with Walmart opens a new avenue for monetization. The company has previously tested AI commerce with smaller sellers, but collaborating with a retail giant expands its reach dramatically.
This partnership highlights the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and e-commerce. As more consumers interact with AI assistants, shopping through chatbots may become increasingly common. Analysts suggest that this could reshape online retail, making purchases faster and more conversational.
While specific launch details are pending, both OpenAI and Walmart appear committed to bringing AI-assisted shopping to mainstream consumers. The collaboration reflects a broader trend of technology and retail convergence, as companies explore new ways to simplify purchasing and engage customers.
As the feature rolls out, shoppers may soon be able to buy groceries, household essentials, and more just by chatting with an AI, marking a new chapter in online shopping convenience.
